Tell us about Hozhonigo Consulting: what do you wish more people knew about your organization beyond the information available online?
Hozhonigo Consulting is a 100% Native American woman-owned consulting firm based on Nuwu land (Southern Paiute) in Las Vegas, NV that serves tribal governments and indigenous-led organizations. Since 2015, Hozhonigo Consulting has helped our clients secure more than $30 million in vital funding across various departments and service-areas. Describe your current role: what is your “official” title, and your “unofficial” title?
I am the CEO and Founder of Hozhonigo Consulting but also wear the hats of mom, wife, sister, daughter, and auntie. I am also a matriarch and a carrier of my clan: Hashtłishnii (the mud people.)
Could you share some examples of the current projects you’re working on at Hozhonigo Consulting?
We have many projects that I am incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to bring to fruition. As an example, we are assisting two communities with fund development and grant writing for water infrastructure improvement projects. Many tribal communities still have their original water infrastructure that was installed by the Indian Health Service in the 1950s while others, like my home community on the Navajo Nation, do not have running water to much of the community. These two projects are working to not only upgrade the existing water systems but to also expand them to service both communities that have both outgrown the water systems.
What does “social impact” mean to you at Hozhonigo Consulting?
Social impact to me is woven into every aspect of my company and is best illustrated in our company name. The word “hozhonigo” is a Diné lifeway guiding us to strive for the pursuit of beauty, peace, and harmony (hozho) in all that we do as a means of honoring our ancestors and paving a good path for future generations. As I developed my business model, I felt that hozhonigo accurately captured my mission to preserve and honor our traditional ways of life and care for our elders, our communities, our young ones, future generations, and Nahasdzáán Shimá (Mother Earth).
Advice for jobseekers hoping to join your organization? What are some of the qualities you look for in hiring?
We love folks who are down to Earth and are very self-directed and self-motivated. Folks who understand that our communities are still working to overcome historical trauma and are incredibly pleasant and humble. Our communities have historically leaned on humor to deal with trauma so a sense of humor is always appreciated and welcomed. When you are a part of our team you will be meeting so many incredible people who are doing what they can to make things happen and they are often members of the communities they serve or another tribal community.
One thing that we always appreciate is avoiding trying to connect through Native American ancestry. We often have folks attempting to connect with us by sharing their Native American lineage which is not necessary and can sometimes be offensive.
And finally, tell us more about the specific role you’re hiring for: the Individual Giving Manager. Describe some of the “dream qualities” of the person in this role, beyond what we read in the official job description.
The Individual Giving Manager role will begin by assisting two of our indigenous-led nonprofit clients cultivate, grow, and steward their major gifts programs by identifying high wealth individuals and “invitation only” foundations that align with the missions of these two particular clients.
Dream qualities of this person would be someone who can step in to be both a student and teacher to learn about each organization while also having strong leadership skills to walk teams through the process. Patience, understanding, grace, and commitment to serving underserved communities is a must. I find that so many of our clients are incredible at their particular role or executing their particular duties and responsibilities but are just beginning to understand fundraising and the different avenues of fundraising. The two greatest untapped opportunities for our clients are building their annual giving campaigns both through their major gifts portfolio and online giving strategy. My dream candidate would be able to do both while also partnering with the grants team to ensure synergy and alignment between fundraising strategies on both teams.
