The Story

The FDA has cleared a vaccine to combat RSV.

Walk me through it.

RSV is the leading cause of hospitalization for infants. For most kids, the virus causes a mild, cold-like disease. For others it’s devastating, killing hundreds of kids each year. Yesterday, the FDA cleared the first vaccine to combat the virus in babies.

How’d that happen?

This spring, the FDA cleared Pfizer’s RSV vaccine for seniors — one of the most vulnerable groups to RSV. Now, the FDA gave the green light for pregnant people to take the vaccine in their third trimester. The goal is to pass on antibodies to the babies. And it seems to work, reducing severe disease by more than 80% — with efficacy waning in the months after.

What are people saying?

Some are concerned about a 1% uptick in preterm births in the group that got vaccinated. Pfizer called the uptick statistically insignificant. One exec described the vaccine as the culmination of “50 years of trying to find a way where we can protect babies.”

This vaccine marks the second preventative treatment for RSV, expected to be publicly available in October, just in time for RSV season. After a year of overwhelmed hospitals and amid an uptick in COVID cases, many are celebrating the win.

And Also...This

Who’s paying up…

Donald Trump. The former president said he’ll turn himself in to Georgia authorities this Thursday and pay the $200,000 bail. Trump still maintains his innocence over the state’s election interference charges — one of four indictments for the former president in the past year. None of this is slowing him down, though, with Trump at a more than a 40-point lead over all other GOP primary candidates. Those eight candidates will get a chance to play catch up tomorrow when they appear at the first GOP primary debate. Don’t expect to see Trump there, though: he’s skipping the debate and releasing a pre-taped Tucker Carlson interview instead.

Why people are still calling foul...

That unwanted kiss. Yesterday, Spain’s soccer chief Luis Rubiales apologized for planting that on champion Jennifer Hermoso after La Roja claimed its first Women’s World Cup title. Hermoso said she “didn’t like it” and that she “didn’t expect it” but that “it was because of the emotion of the moment” and “there’s nothing more there.” Spain’s Minister of Culture and Sport called the kiss “unacceptable” and many are still calling for his resignation. Rubiales said he “made a mistake” and “somewhat tarnished the celebration.”

What’s at the top of the charts…

Rich Men North of Richmond.” Yesterday, Oliver Anthony’s song debuted at No. 1 in the US despite all the controversy. With lyrics like “taxes ought not to pay for your bags of fudge rounds,” conservative commentators like Laura Ingraham have praised the song for highlighting the working class’s struggles. It comes just weeks after Jason Aldean’s “Try That in a Small Town” topped the charts despite concerns of racially charged imagery in the music video. Now, Anthony is the first artist to reach the top of the charts with no prior chart history. Still, he doesn’t identify with the left or the right. In an interview, Anthony said we need to “appreciate” diversity and not “use it as a political tool to keep everyone separate.”

Why the ‘iPad kid’ jokes might hit too close to home…

Screen time. A new study found that 1-year-olds exposed to one to four hours of screen time daily might be at risk of developmental and communication delays. The Japanese study looked at more than 7,000 kids and tracked their milestones against parents’ reports of how much screen time they had gotten at age 1. Turns out, a range of skills were impacted — including fine motor, social, and communication skills. Kids who’d had four or more hours of screen time per day as babies caught up to their peers in most areas by age 4 — except communication and problem solving. The study’s authors say more research is needed.

Who’s not back but better…

Sha’Carri Richardson. Yesterday, the track star won the 100-meter world title with a championship record of 10.65 seconds. Just before the Tokyo Olympics, Richardson was suspended after testing positive for marijuana — a ruling many called unfair. Now, she’s officially the fastest woman in the world and has her eyes set on next summer’s Olympic Games.

While Lana Del Rey’s asking for time off from her Waffle House gig…

Trader Joe’s got another recall.

While Ariana Grande and Demi Lovato might be scooting off...

Charity scooted off into the sunset.

Who might’ve welcomed a Leo baby…

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky.
