The Story

Former President Trump is the first president to have a mugshot.

Tell me.

Yesterday, Trump surrendered at Fulton County jail where he had his photo and fingerprints taken. The former president faces 13 counts in Georgia for attempting to overturn the state’s 2020 election results. He did not get his picture snapped during his first three indictments. Now, Trump has what could become the most famous mugshot in American history. Expect to see it on t-shirts, college dorm room walls, and anything that a price tag can be slapped onto. The Trump campaign might even get in on it, with Trump including the mugshot in his first X-slash-Twitter post since 2021.

Is that all?

No. Hundreds of people including Trump supporters stood outside the jail all day. Surrounding streets closed off and residents prepared for potential pandemonium. Trump also decided it would be a good time to shake up his legal team. Meanwhile, House Republicans launched an investigation into Fani Willis — the Fulton County DA who brought the charges against Trump. It all comes as Willis called for an accelerated trial date of Oct 23, which Trump doesn’t want.

Trump’s mugshot represents a historic moment in America’s democracy: a former president seeking the Oval Office again is running with unwavering party support, a mugshot, and four indictments under his belt.

And Also...This

What’s not getting glossed over…

The kiss at the Women’s World Cup. Yesterday, FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings against Spain’s soccer chief Luis Rubiales. As Spain celebrated its first Women’s World Cup title, Rubiales planted an unwanted kiss on champion Jennifer Hermoso. The behavior doesn’t stop there. Rubiales was also criticized for grabbing his crotch while celebrating the team’s win as he was standing near Spain’s Queen Letizia and 16-year-old Princess Infanta Sofía. After initially calling his critics “idiots,” Rubiales apologized for his actions — while many continue to call for his resignation. Megan Rapinoe said the kiss points to a “deep level of misogyny and sexism” in the federation and Rubiales. Now, Hermoso is speaking out through her union calling the kiss “unacceptable.” It comes as the Royal Spanish Football Federation reportedly wrongly attributed a quote to Hermoso calling the incident "spontaneous."

Who’s going shopping together…

Shein and Forever 21. Yesterday, Shein announced it sewed up a deal to expand the reach of both fast fashion brands. Shein, with annual sales of $30 billion, is dominating the online retail market. And with over 500 locations, Forever 21 is bringing brick-and-mortar to the table. See? They match. Now, Shein will own a third of Forever 21, and Forever 21 will be a minority shareholder of the e-commerce site. The deal could also have Shein opening stores within Forever 21 locations (allowing in-store returns) and bringing some Forever 21 pieces to Shein’s website.

What’s got people concerned…

PFAS. Yesterday, a report said that Asian Americans have higher levels of PFAS than other groups. The so-called “forever chemicals” have been linked to high cholesterol, infertility, and cancer. Now, the study found that the median level was 88% higher for Asian Americans than non-Hispanic white people. The study factored in sociodemographics, diet, and behavior into the research. The authors say it's unclear why the levels are higher and that more research is needed. Some point to fish being a major source of PFAS and populations who have more seafood in their diets could be more at risk.

…Oh and speaking of seafood, yesterday, China banned seafood imports from Japan after the release of the Fukushima wastewater. Japan says it needs to release the water to avoid accidental leaks as protests pile on.
