We’re going to let you in on some inside information about how The Intercept is funded.
Every month we set a goal for reader donations, and traditionally August is one of the hardest months to make our target. After all, with people taking vacations and not quite as focused on the news, donations tend to be overlooked.
But this year has been especially difficult, and not just for The Intercept. In fact, organizations that track charitable giving report that donations are down across the board by as much as 13 percent year over year, adjusted for inflation.
For a nonprofit news outlet like The Intercept, that’s a serious problem.
We have crucial reporting planned for this fall, from uncovering dark-money funding of presidential campaigns to exposing the fallout from U.S. policy failures around the world.
Reader support is a vital part of how we fund these investigations. And with just two days left in August, we need a significant uptick in donations to hit our goals for membership fundraising going into the final months of 2023.
Will you make a donation to The Intercept and help close our August fundraising shortfall?

This is no time for investigative journalism to be cutting back or trimming our sails. U.S. democracy is facing one of the greatest stress tests we’ve ever seen, with a former president running to reclaim the White House while under indictment for trying to steal the last election.
But this year has been especially devastating for online journalism. Outlets like Vice Media have filed for bankruptcy and cut staff, while others, including BuzzFeed News, shut down entirely.
