Hot off the invention of the phonograph, the world held its collective breath as it awaited Edison’s latest creation.

The Incandescent light bulb was well on its way to becoming the single greatest invention of the nineteenth century, save for one small problem.

Because Edison couldn’t figure out a way to regulate the bulb’s internal temperature, it would burn brighter than sin in a church for 5-minutes before overheating, melting the interior filament and, finally, going kaput.

Worst yet, the press was breathing down the back of Edison’s neck, demanding he unveil the highly-anticipated invention he had promised.

To buy himself some much-needed time to sort out the overheating conundrum, Edison invited a sea of journalists to his Menlo Park laboratory.

One at a time, they were each escorted into a blacked-out room where they were allowed to gaze upon the bulb’s luminescence before hastily being shown the door.

The press was in complete and total awe of Edison’s scientific miracle and described their mystifying experiences in print that sent the world into hysteria.

One journalist wrote that when asked how long his invention would shine, Edison responded, “Forever, almost.”

12-months later, Edison’s lightbulb made its public debut on New Year’s Eve, where it burned and burned and burned without ever burning out.
