Gauff vs. Sabalenka

American teen tennis prodigy Coco Gauff from South Florida takes on No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus in today's US Open women's singles final (4 pm ET, ESPN). Both players are vying for their first singles title at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, New York.

The 19-year-old Gauff, currently ranked sixth in the world, is the youngest American to reach the title match since Serena Williams in 1999. Gauff, who made her first Grand Slam debut at age 15, beat No.10 Karolina Muchová in a semifinal match Thursday (watch highlights). Gauff also reached the title match in the 2022 French Open but lost to No. 1 seed Iga Swiatek.

Sabalenka, 25, became the 13th woman in the Open era to make it to the semifinals at all four Grand Slams in a season. She beat US player Madison Keys, ranked seventeenth in the world, Thursday. Sabalenka won her first Grand Slam title in January at the Australian Open and is expected to replace Swiatek as the top-ranked player when the Women's Tennis Association releases updated rankings Monday.

Separately, No. 2 seed and 23-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic, 36, and No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev, 27, will face each other in the US Open men's singles final tomorrow (4 pm ET, ESPN).

Hong Kong flooded after heaviest hourly rainfall on record since 1884.

At least two people were killed and 144 injured in Hong Kong amid the record rainfall and flooding, caused by Typhoon Haikui, which made landfall in the Chinese province of Fujian earlier this week. Grand jury report in Fulton County, Georgia, 2020 election probe released.

According to the report, the special grand jury hearing the case had recommended charges against 39 people in total; 20 of them were not ultimately indicted and included current Sen. Team USA falls to Germany in men's FIBA Basketball World Cup semifinals.

Germany beat the US 113-111 Friday and will play Serbia Sunday (8:40 am ET, ESPN2) for the World Cup title. The US will play Canada for a bronze medal Sunday (4:40 am ET, ESPN2). This is the second consecutive FIBA World Cup in which the US has failed to secure a gold medal after winning in 2014 and 2010.

Spanish state prosecutors file sexual assault suit against Luis Rubiales.

The prosecutors filed the case against the suspended head of the Spanish soccer federation to Spain’s National Court in Madrid. They accuse Rubiales of sexual assault and coercion for kissing player Jenni Hermoso without her consent after the women's World Cup final last month. The filing comes two days after Hermoso formally accused Rubiales of sexual assault.

Kroger to divest over 400 stores in bid to close $25B merger with Albertsons.

The grocery stores have agreed to sell 413 stores across the country to C&S Wholesale Grocers for $2B. The divestiture also includes the sale of some distributors and private-label brands. The move is aimed at gaining antitrust clearance from the Federal Trade Commission for the proposed merger.

"My husband and I were visiting one of our children in Washington, DC. One very warm afternoon, we returned to his condo with several large bags of groceries. Our son’s condo is on the second floor of the building, up very steep external and internal stairs with no elevator. Because of some orthopedic issues, I was struggling with the external stairs as I carried my share of the grocery bags. Suddenly, a woman came up behind me, said, “honey, I’ve got this,” took the bags from me, and ran them up the stairs to the front door of the building. I was so grateful to her, and even more stunned by her act of kindness when I realized that she was the driver of a Metro bus that was idling at a red light in front of the building.
