Morocco

The Story

Morocco is mourning.

What’s the latest?

On Friday, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck the North African country, killing more than 2,100 people. It’s the most powerful earthquake in more than 100 years, with the death toll expected to rise. The hardest hit were poor and rural villages about 45 miles south of Marrakech. Many historic buildings were destroyed, including part of a 12th-century mosque. Now, people are reportedly without power, phone, or internet and many remain homeless while others fear additional aftershocks.

What’s the government doing?

Morocco’s King Mohammed VI declared three days of mourning. The army arranged search and rescue teams. Still, many criticized the efforts for being too slow and unorganized. Meanwhile, several countries, including the US, have offered support including humanitarian and medical assistance.

Survivors of Morocco’s deadly earthquake are struggling to find food, water, and shelter as the search and rescue efforts continue — and many are wondering how long they’ll have to wait.

And Also...This

Who’s receiving backlash…

Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis. Over the weekend, the couple apologized for the character letters they wrote supporting their former “That ‘70s Show” co-star Danny Masterson. In the letters to a judge overseeing Masterson’s sentencing, the couple described Masterson — sentenced last week after raping two women in 2003 — as a man who treated people “with decency, equality, and generosity” and an “outstanding role model.” Now, the celebrity couple is apologizing, saying they didn’t mean to “undermine the testimony of the victims or re-traumatize them.” As they put it, “we support victims.” Amidst the backlash, one of Masterson's accusers reportedly resurfaced a 2003 clip of Kutcher saying he's “waiting” for then 16-year-old Hilary Duff to turn 18 — comments that many on social media agreed didn’t age well.

Who threw in the towel…

Luis Rubiales. Yesterday, the Spanish soccer federation president announced in a Piers Morgan interview that he’s resigning from his post. For weeks, Rubiales has rejected calls to resign after he forcibly kissed Spain’s star player Jenni Hermoso at the Women’s World Cup final. Now, after weeks of pressure and a formal sexual assault complaint, Rubiales says he can’t continue his work and that his family has “suffered the effects of persecution excessively, as well as many falsehoods.”

Who’s never a bad idea right?...

Olivia Rodrigo. Now that the singer-songwriter has released her second album, the reviews for “GUTS” are starting to trickle in. Many mainstream outlets are singing her praises. Still, some listeners have been drawing parallels between songs like Miley Cyrus’ “Start All Over” and Rodrigo’s “all american b*tch.” The comparisons aren’t new to fans, many of whom see them as disrespectful of Rodrigo’s creative work. In the past, Rodrigo herself has called it “frustrating” to see people “discredit and deny” her creativity. It comes as some have been wondering if songs like “vampire” and “the grudge” are directed at Taylor Swift, whose song was interpolated on Rodrigo’s debut album, “SOUR.”

Who must be running out of room on his shelf…

Novak Djokovic. Yesterday, the Serbian tennis player won his 24th Grand Slam title. It came after Coco Gauff won her first — becoming the youngest American major winner since Serena Williams in 1999.

While VP Kamala Harris got jiggy with it…

Former President Trump tailgated.
