Write of Passage Weekly - How Write of Passage Helps You Publish

This Thursday, I’m hosting a Write of Passage Test Drive workshop, where you’ll get a live taste of our upcoming cohort. You’ll hear everything I’m about to share with you, in even more detail. I’d love for you to join us. 

Ever take a workout class — kickboxing, Pilates, spin? 

Whatever it is, the energy of the group is electric. A spin class is nothing like riding a stationary bike at home. In a workout class, you have people who support you and hold you accountable. The workout is challenging, but it’s easier (and more fun) to do it with a group. You can work out harder and longer with like-minded people by your side.

The same goes for publishing your work online. 

Maybe you think writing is a solitary sport. It’s not. In Write of Passage, writing is social, and so is publishing. Like a workout class, publishing your work is easier with support from a community of like-minded peers, who hold you accountable and keep you consistent. 

In our post-cohort survey, 38 students said the course was “life-changing.” And many cite Write of Passage community as the most impactful part of the course.

More than anything, this is what I wish I would have had when I first started writing online. That’s why every session in Write of Passage is social. And every part of the course is designed to help you publish.

Here’s how:

• You’ll join two electrifying 90-minute Live Sessions each week. 

Forget everything you know about traditional education. In these sessions, you’ll learn new writing frameworks, jump into breakout rooms, practice live writing exercises, and pitch ideas to your peers. Unlike boring lecture halls, we don’t punish collaboration; we encourage it. 

• You’ll practice your skills in weekly Deep Dives. 

Pick a Deep Dive taught by an expert Guide (can’t choose between Louie’s Deep Dive about audience-building and Charlie’s Deep Dive about POP Writing? Go to both!). These one-hour workshops will help you hone specific skills that you can implement in your writing right away. 

• You’ll receive support from your Peer Group. 

Welcome to your cohort-within-the-cohort. Your Peer Group is a group of 15–20 students whose passions, interests, and writing goals are similar to yours. You’ll meet with this group once per week, and they will make sure you publish five out of the five weeks.

• You’ll develop your ideas in Idea Gyms. 

Chat one-on-one with another student to nail down your writing topic for the week. You may be bursting with ideas on what you want to write about — or, you might be coming up blank. Either way, these sessions are designed to help you develop an idea you’re excited about. 

• You’ll find your flow in Writing Gyms, daily writing cafes. 

Smooth jazz. A cup of coffee close by. A silent video call full of your peers, all heads-down writing. You wouldn’t think a silent room would hold so much power, but these daily Writing Gyms fuel our students’ most productive writing sessions. 

• You’ll receive one-on-one feedback in Feedback Gyms. 

Hop into a breakout room with a fellow student and work through your drafts together. You’ll cut out the guesswork by receiving detailed feedback on your writing, spurring you to polish your essay and get it ready to ship.

• You’ll hit “Publish” alongside your peers in Publishing Gyms. 

Finally, you’ll publish a piece you’re proud of, live, alongside fellow writers. Like a workout class, the energy is contagious — and it leaves you looking forward to the next go-around.

Below is the weekly session schedule for Cohort 11 (times listed in Eastern Time / New York).

In Write of Passage, writing is social. You will never write, edit, or publish alone. You’ll be immersed in a vibrant and global group of like-minded peers all striving towards similar goals. It makes for an extraordinary community.

Writers often smack into two mental blockers (I face these too): 1) Is my writing too boring? and 2) Who am I writing for? This Thursday, I’m hosting a workshop where you can get the full experience of a Write of Passage Live Session and learn ways to overcome these blockers. 

You’ll learn how POP Writing can help you find your voice and make your ideas sticky on the Internet (i.e. not boring). And you’ll learn the Architect vs. Archeologist framework for finding your Personal Monopoly (i.e. who you’re writing for).
