The GIST - Take that, rewind it back
From The Gist Team |
It’s a new week!
May you speed into it like Ethiopia’s Tigist Assefa, who blazed her way to a new women’s marathon world record yesterday, conquering the Berlin course in an incredible 2:11:53. Blink and you’ll miss her.
- And there’s no time to slow down with a jam-packed sports weekend to discuss. On your mark, get set, scroll.

Quote of the Day |
I obviously know that this is an ending of one chapter, but it feels very much like a beginning. |
|
— USWNT icon Megan Rapinoe, ahead of her final match donning the red, white, and blue yesterday. During her storied national team career, the two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup champ and three-time Olympian tallied 203 caps, 63 international goals, and won the 2019 Ballon d’Or Féminin.

The Latest |
🏀 Any given Sunday
The GIST: And then there were four. The best-of-five WNBA semis tipped off yesterday with two top-notch clashes to start the party.
No. 3 Connecticut Sun vs. No. 2 NY Liberty: Connecticut picked the perfect time to get their first win of the year vs. New York, topping the superteam 78–63 on the road to take a 1-0 series lead. With the Libs limiting Sun star Alyssa Thomas, the rest of the Connecticut roster stepped up, namely Rebecca Allen (18 points), who clearly took the red pill.
- The Liberty, meanwhile, looked sluggish in the second half, netting a mere 23 points across the final 20 minutes en route to their season-low total of 63. Yeesh.
- Watch for the seafoamers to crank up the intensity — specifically MVP candidate Breanna Stewart — with Game 2 on deck from the Big Apple, tomorrow at 8 p.m. ET.
No. 4 Dallas Wings vs. No. 1 Las Vegas Aces: As one superteam sputtered in the second half, the other one surged — the Aces poured on the points in yesterday’s 97–83 domination of the Wings. Who else but A’ja Wilson tied a WNBA playoff record for field goals made in a single game. Nothing but net.
- In terrifying news for the Dallas faithful, the rest of the Aces’ big four balled out, too, with Jackie Young, Kelsey Plum, and Chelsea Gray all dropping double figure point totals. See if what happened in Vegas happens again in Game 2 tomorrow at 10 p.m. ET.
🏈 Week 3: Need to know
The GIST: ICYMI: Taylor Swift — who has done things greater than dating the boy on the football team — took in yesterday’s 41–10 Kansas City Chiefs’ shellacking of the Chicago Bears. In her Red era.
- And while Taylor won’t be making a Super Bowl halftime show appearance this season, there are plenty of other Week 3 NFL highlights to get hyped for.
He’s got the magic in him: Back on the gridiron, Kansas City quarterback (QB) Patrick Mahomes made history, becoming the fastest QB to throw for 25K yards, reaching the milestone in just 83 games. No pressure, no diamonds.
Feeling hot, hot, hot: The Miami Dolphins’ offense is too legit to quit — the undefeated Fins put on an offensive clinic in yesterday’s dominant 70–20 dub over the Denver Broncos, tallying the most points in an NFL game since 1966.
Winless no more: The Arizona Cardinals emphatically slotted one in the win column yesterday, knocking off the seemingly invincible Dallas Cowboys 28–16 as QB Josh Dobbs threw for 189 yards and ran for 55 more in the upset dub.
- Other squads snagging their first victories of the season? The New England Patriots (15–10 over the NY Jets), LA Chargers (28–24 over the Minnesota Vikings), and Houston Texans (37–17 over the Jacksonville Jaguars). Onward and upward.
Looking ahead: Week 3 isn’t even over yet, with two Monday Night Football games on the docket. The Philadelphia Eagles are heading due south to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 7:15 p.m. ET in a battle of undefeated squads.
- Then, the still winless Cincinnati Bengals — who could be without injured superstar QB Joe Burrow — host the LA Rams at 8:15 p.m. ET. No case of the Mondays here.

⛳ Europe claims historic third straight Solheim Cup title
This year’s highly anticipated tournament literally came down to the wire. But thanks to Spain’s hometown hero Carlota Ciganda pulling out a nail-biting singles match play win, Team Europe came back to secure a 14-14 tie with Team USA, giving the defending champs the victory under the tourney’s tiebreaker (or lack thereof) rules.
🎓🏈 Chaos defines college football Week 4
Saturday brought the stunners as head coach Deion Sanders’ then–No. 19 Colorado squad were schooled 42–6 by then–No. 10 Oregon, the Buffs’ first loss of the season.
- Then in the nightcap, then–No. 6 Ohio State shocked then–No. 9 Notre Dame in the final seconds. The Fighting Irish had only 10 players (instead of the typical 11) on the field on the final play, which helped the Buckeyes to score the game-winning touchdown.
🏎️ Red Bull wins second consecutive Constructors’ Championship
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen returned to form at yesterday’s Japanese Grand Prix, nabbing his historic 13th win of the season, while the McLaren duo of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri rounded out the podium, the rookie Piastri’s first time reaching the top three.
Despite Team USA’s tough 2023 Solheim loss to Team Europe, there’s still plenty to celebrate with the buzz around women’s golf at an all-time high.
The best part? Another edition of the LPGA’s Super Bowl is right around the corner. Usually a biennial event, the Solheim Cup is now moving to even years — which means the Americans’ title push on U.S. soil is just a year away, and tickets are already on sale. BRB, highlighting September 10th–15th, 2024 on the cal.
- Witness one of the fiercest competitions women’s golf has to offer with your very own eyes. Start planning that trip to the D.C. area — Danielle Kang (and her golf clubs) will see you there.
