Flow State - Axel Boman
You’re on the free tier of Flow State, the weekday focus music newsletter that highlights one artist and several of their albums. Paying subscribers get a daily playlist with additional recs and a weekly Tuesday mix that sources one-off discoveries and reader recommendations. Upgrade to paid to unlock those features and support what we do. Good morning. We are off on Monday. It’s Friday so we’re listening to something more upbeat. Today we’re listening to Axel Boman, a Swedish producer and DJ. He started DJing at age 13, coming up in the ‘90s DJing in techno clubs, though the biggest influence on his own music was dub.¹ He listened to a lot of reggae and dub music, and in his own music fuses those genres’ low-slung, echoey emanations with dance formats. We’re playing two albums released nine years apart. Family Vacation from 2013 is his debut LP, demonstrating that dubby, almost deep house style. Quest for Fire from 2022 presents a more polished style, with tracks that strike us as more for headphones than for dancefloors. Family Vacation - Axel Boman (70m, short vocal samples on tracks 2, 6, 7, and 11) Quest for Fire - Axel Boman (50m, vocal snippets throughout) Have an awesome weekend.
