It’s Monday. It seems as though headlines have been whispering about a recession for well over a year now. The wider economy continues to rebuff those predictions, but the tech sector is still struggling. Tech Brew’s Patrick Kulp rounded up recent tech layoffs and noted that the “tech recession,” which some analysts declared was behind us just a few months ago, remains upon us.

After a lull in which it seemed like the worst of the layoffs had passed for tech workers, a fresh wave of job cuts is now upon Silicon Valley.

Major companies like LinkedIn, Qualcomm, and Nokia announced substantial headcount slashes this month, pointing to factors like weakened revenues and ongoing cost-cutting drives.

The tech industry job losses are still far from the peaks they reached earlier this year, when tech giants dropped tens of thousands of positions combined. But the new spate of notable names making relatively deep cuts signals the bleeding isn’t quite over, even after analysts at Bernstein Research declared in August that the tech jobs recession was done.

Another day, another poll showing Americans distrust AI.

This time, Pew Research found that 70% of respondents who’ve heard of AI have “little to no trust in companies to make responsible decisions about how they use it in their products.” Four in five say AI will lead to their personal information being used in ways they didn’t intend.

The survey adds to a growing chorus of data from the likes of Gallup, Ipsos, and Salesforce showing that Americans resoundingly lack faith in companies to handle the technology responsibly.

Those suspicions could prove a problem as businesses of all kinds rush to implement a new wave of generative AI across everything from customer service to hiring. The good news for them is that 62% of Americans expect companies to use it to make people’s lives easier, Pew found.

How would you describe your job to someone who doesn’t work in tech?

At ETS, I lead the charge in leveraging technology to improve education globally. When the first iterations of generative AI came about, I knew it would have a major impact on the field of education. In 2020, I founded the AI Labs at ETS so that we could be the leaders in helping educators and students learn how to use it responsibly and effectively. As edtech continues to advance, my team is responsible for researching and understanding it, as well as providing ethical user guidelines and finding the best way to incorporate it into our operations to deliver the next AI-powered solutions.

What’s the most compelling tech project you’ve worked on, and why?

It’s definitely my current work at ETS on authentic skills assessment. I have the privilege to contribute to the transformation of educational measurement and how technologies, such as multimodal AI, can help people naturally diagnose, develop, and ultimately demonstrate their unique tapestry of skills.

While I work at an organization with a global reputation as a leader in assessment, I believe the future is actually testless. Based on my training in psychometrics, I work from the inside of the industry to disrupt how we approach educational measurement but continue to create valid and reliable measures. In this dynamic economy, the skills people need to be successful extend beyond the cognitive skills that are measured on traditional tests. My teams build solutions that reliably and validly provide signals on affective, behavioral, and cognitive skills—but don’t require a No. 2 pencil.
