Before we get to the companies...

Almost every 4 day week study has shown the same thing:

Output doesn't drop.

But how can this be if we are working 20% less?

I must admit - it does feel counter intuitive. But here's why output doesn't drop:

  1. Parkinson's law: People naturally work faster when they have less time - crazy / awesome human psychology 🧠.
  2. Reduced Fatigue: Fewer days at work means less burnout, resulting in more energized staff.
  3. Less sick days: Staff are off sick less - the company "claws" a few days back.
  4. Less meetings: When companies make the switch, they usually reduce meetings (both length & frequency).
  5. Less wasted time: 4 day week staff are less likely to switch jobs, meaning less time is "wasted" on recruitment / onboarding.
  6. Culture change: (ironically) a shorter week emphasizes outcomes over "hours worked".
