Grammy Nominations Announced

The 2024 Grammy nominations were revealed yesterday, with R&B singer-songwriter SZA leading all artists with nine nominations. The 34-year-old musician nabbed nods for Album of the Year ("SOS") and both Song and Record of the Year for the track "Kill Bill." Yesterday's list brings her career total to 24 nominations, with one win.

Pop artist Victoria Monét, indie rocker Phoebe Bridgers, and producer Serban Ghenea followed SZA with seven nominations apiece. In the nonartist categories, the soundtrack to the box-office hit "Barbie"—which brought in $1.4B in ticket sales—earned 11 nominations. The haul included four out of five in the Best Song Written for Visual Media category.

Overall, female acts dominated the top categories. Singer Jon Batiste was the only male act nominated for either Record or Album of the Year.

Humankind(ness)

Today, we're sharing a story from reader Ellen H. in Ocala, Florida.

"In 1968, I was a high school senior who, due to ongoing issues in my family life, struggled to keep up with class work ... I was disengaged from school …with the exception of my English composition class. I loved the assignments but had the feeling my teacher didn’t like me much; she kept giving C's with little to no feedback. In the last quarter of the year, a student teacher was assigned to our class ... the student teacher walked down the aisle and handed the paper to me. She leaned over and said, 'You’re a great storyteller. I can’t wait to read your next assignment.'

I was shocked to find B+ with a smiley face on my assignment and a few suggestions for improvement. She continued to provide valuable feedback on every assignment ... Many A's followed. This student teacher’s positive attention, guidance and encouragement set me on a path that culminated in a 54-year career in journalism and corporate communications. I don’t remember her name but I’ll never forget her confidence in me when I was at my lowest point."
