A gunman opened fire on the campus of the University of Nevada Las Vegas yesterday, killing at least three people and critically wounding at least one other. The suspect was killed at the scene after a shootout with police.
As of this writing police have neither identified the suspect or publicly revealed a motive, nor has information on the victims been released. Reports suggest the shooter began the attack in the building housing the university's business school, though it was unclear whether the facility was specifically targeted. It marks the second such mass shooting on a college campus this year, following a February attack at Michigan State University that left three dead and eight injured.
Separately, a suspect believed to have killed six people and wounded three others in a Tuesday shooting spree across San Antonio and Austin, Texas, was charged with capital murder. |
Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R, CA-20) announced yesterday he is resigning from Congress this month before the end of his term in January 2025. The 58-year-old's exit caps off a 17-year career in the House and comes two months after he became the first House speaker in US history to be removed from office.
McCarthy, who was elected to Congress in 2006 and became speaker in January after 15 rounds of votes (see voting record), currently represents a safe Republican district spanning much of the southern parts of California's Central Valley (see map). A primary special election will need to be held in California next year to fill McCarthy's seat.
McCarthy joins more than 30 members of the House and at least seven members of the Senate who aren't seeking reelection (see list).

Legendary comedy writer and producer Norman Lear died yesterday at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 101. The Emmy-award-winning writer of CBS' 1970s sitcom "All in the Family" is credited with pioneering socially aware, topical hit TV shows.
Born and raised in Connecticut in 1922 to Russian migrants, Lear served in the Air Force in Europe during World War II, moving to Los Angeles afterward to try comedy. Early success with writing for Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis led to movie productions in the 1960s, including Oscar-nominated "Divorce, American Style."
Lear would become a household name with "All in the Family," a Queens-based sitcom centering crass Archie Bunker, which many critics claimed dealt effectively with sensitive social topics. The show would spawn six spin-offs, including the highly successful "The Jeffersons."
The recipient of several Lifetime Achievement Awards, a place in the TV Hall of Fame, and more, Lear also had a hand in many iconic films, including "Stand by Me" and "The Princess Bride." See his life in photos here. |
