I know The Intercept has been sending a lot of emails, but I’m hoping you’ll read this one

Militarism and occupations are just two of many areas where we need The Intercept’s challenge to elite groupthink — especially with press freedom under increasing assault and so many newsroom investigative budgets slashed to the bone.

Have you noticed? Even as evidence of Israeli war crimes continues to pile up, Gaza is steadily receding from the front pages of many news outlets in North America and Europe. They seem ready to move on to less distressing holiday fare.

Not at The Intercept, however. Its remarkable team of journalists refuses to turn away from the carnage in Gaza or from settler violence in the West Bank. Just as importantly, Intercept journalists expose how Israeli and U.S. institutions weaponize baseless accusations of antisemitism to attack the people standing up for Palestinian human rights. This is a strategy that trivializes the fight against very real escalations of antisemitism around the world, which in turn helps the far right.

Militarism and occupations are just two of many areas where we need The Intercept’s challenge to elite groupthink — especially with press freedom under increasing assault and so many newsroom investigative budgets slashed to the bone.

If you, like me, depend on The Intercept’s nonprofit journalism, this is the moment to step up. There are just four days left before December 31, so time is running out to meet this year’s fundraising goal.

In targeting civilians on October 7, Hamas is clearly guilty of war crimes. But too many news outlets have ignored Israel’s countless crimes as an occupying power leading up to it and obscured the layers of illegality in Israel’s frenzied response afterward. Instead, they speak euphemistically of “self-defense,” even as officials in Benjamin Netanyahu’s government openly espouse genocidal ambitions.

That’s why I’ve so appreciated The Intercept’s moral clarity from the beginning of this crisis. As Jeremy Scahill has written, “We should end the charade that this is an Israeli war against Hamas. We should call it what it is: a joint U.S.–Israeli war against the people of Gaza.” Indeed against Palestinians as a people.

Meanwhile, as Israel bars most international journalists from entering Gaza, The Intercept has brought us voices from on the ground — like Palestinian journalist Hind Khoudary’s devastating first-person account of fleeing Gaza City on foot to escape Israeli bombings.

This kind of critical coverage isn’t popular, and it isn’t easy to fund. That’s why we need nonprofit journalism willing to challenge any and every government, including the Israeli government, as well as the U.S. military-industrial complex.

The Intercept’s editorial independence is made possible by the generous support of readers determined to challenge an unjust status quo. Donate before December 31 and help reach this year-end fundraising goal.
