Curiosities

Since we're talking money, I'll share a link I found about how much it costs to run a business selling apps on the macOS app store — from Romania. Very interesting to see the unit economics. The dev made $100k in revenue, which, after intermediaries, leaves him with $5800/month. It's massive for Romania and (at least) solid for most other places. And if an app switcher, a calendar app, and a brightness dimmer can create this life, maybe we should all start a little side project. Nudge nudge ;)

I ran into an interesting Hacker News conversation around training AI models on your own data. Down that rabbit hole I went, and I am now working through Fine-Tuning LLaMA 2: A Step-by-Step Guide to Customizing the Large Language Model. I talked about it on the podcast: this stuff is wizardry, and being able to teach a virtual gent exactly what you want them to do from data you already have is an opportunity we'd be negligent not to tap into.

Oh, and one last link: keep an eye on the language model Apple just open-sourced: ml-ferret. Multi-modal. ALMOST ready for consumer hardware. 2024 sure will be an interesting year for on-device language models.
