Amazon seller suspensions led to this [Crew Review]

Hey Reader,

We all love it when Amazon cracks down on third-party sellers who use black hat tactics. But what if while doing so, the platform is also preventing good and honest merchants from operating?

This issue has led to multiple lawsuits against Amazon and the rise of law firms specializing in the area.

According to the Financial Times, these law firms are handling hundreds of cases involving suspended Amazon seller accounts with little to no explanation coming from the platform. Some of the accounts are suspended and reinstated without any reason offered, putting sellers at the mercy of the e-commerce giant.

This increase in unexplained seller suspensions could be used against the company as it continues to face strict scrutiny from the Federal Trade Commission.

In 2022, Amazon introduced the Account Health Assurance (AHA) benefit to prevent summary suspensions like these. However, not all sellers qualify for the benefit.

TikTok’s US E-Commerce Goals

TikTok is not slowing down its e-commerce efforts in the United States. Bloomberg reports that the social media app is aiming to grow its e-commerce business to $17.5 billion this year.

If all goes well for TikTok, Amazon will have more worthy competitors in 2024, including Shein and Temu.

TikTok ran into a few challenges with regulatory bodies last year, but it seems to be recovering. It recently partnered with tech company GoTo to maintain its e-commerce presence in Indonesia. The TikTok ban in Montana also got blocked last November, allowing its residents to still access the app.

Mandatory Refunds

Speaking of TikTok, its Chinese counterpart, Douyin, made it mandatory for sellers to instantly refund orders up to $211 even before the merchant receives the returned item. This is to keep up with a similar offer from JD.com and Taobao.

This policy is not uncommon nowadays, but it remains to be disadvantageous to sellers. Because the refund is issued immediately, merchants will have no chance to inspect the returned package and ensure that it actually contains the product they delivered.

However, because a policy like this is more attractive to buyers, it’s expected that more e-commerce platforms will follow suit. It won’t be surprising if TikTok Shop adopts the same refund policy as Douyin, especially when it gains more traction in the US.

Amazon Top Terms

Explore the preceding two weeks and discover the Amazon top 10 search terms that have experienced a surge in popularity during the last two weeks of the year, from December 17 to December 30.

In the latest Amazon top terms, phrases such as "new year's party hats" and "2024 decorations" have risen to the top 10, showing a notable uptick in sales with an increase of 498 units per day for the former and 777 units per day for the latter. This surge reflects a rising consumer interest in party supplies for the New Year's celebrations.

Additionally, within the top 10, we also find "valentines decor" and "winter wreath," showcasing the anticipation for upcoming events like Valentine's Day and winter, also highlighting the seasonal trends in consumer preferences.
