The start of a new year kicks off a frenzy of new intentions, goals or resolutions. For 2024, many took to social media to share them — but with a fresh spin that not only revealed what’s in for the new year, but what’s out. We asked staff at Skimm HQ to share what’s on their list. Here’s what they had to say...

In: Buying investment and staple pieces and dating myself.

Out: Buying stuff just because it’s on sale, and men who won’t let me do their birth chart.

In: Scalp health. Like focusing on the root of the problem — no pun intended — with hair oils, detoxes, and specialty scalp treatments in spas.

Out: Only targeting split ends for healthy hair.

In: Cozy cardio and probiotics.

Out: HIIT workouts and green juice (sorry, I just can’t).

In: Embracing the arts in my community.

Out: Staying in to binge watch old shows (like “Gilmore Girls”).

In: Gut health, listening to your body, [and] saying ‘no.’

Out: Intense cardio, X, and shots.

In: Putting things in perspective, but still complaining when it feels good. Reading near a lit candle, long walks, [and] aging. 

Out: Small plates, not accepting the things you cannot change, [and] five-year plans.

In: Strength training, resting, self-compassion, skipping workouts, [putting the] phone on Do Not Disturb most of the time, [and] no-buy months.

Out: Being a cardio queen, self-criticism, ignoring my body’s cues, being available all the time, [and] impulse purchases.

Caroline Schaefer, design copywriter:

In: Going to the movie theater.

Out: Inclusion of a potentially-viral dance scene in every movie or show.

Liz Smith, senior manager in branded content:

In: Flexible work, trying and failing, outfit repeating, pasta, “I Voted” stickers, rest, [and] loud budgeting.

Out: Unattainable goals, pay gaps, humble bragging (just say it), [and] declaring that you’re taking a social media break on social media (just do it).
