We’re resisting Israel’s sanitized narrative on Gaza

The Intercept refuses to obey the pro-Israel consensus — that’s why Israel’s official spokesperson in New York has attacked our coverage. But as this war drags into its fourth month, our independent reporting requires the continued financial support of readers like you.

All foreign news organizations operating in Israel are subject to the Israel Defense Forces’s official censor, which dictates subjects that are off-limits.

But The Intercept has just discovered that CNN goes a step further. For years, the network has required that all stories about Israel and Palestine are reviewed by its Jerusalem bureau — ensuring that “the people closest to the Israeli government” can shape the entire outlet’s coverage.

Even after Israel has killed more than 23,000 Palestinians in Gaza, many U.S. outlets continue to present Israel’s sanitized narrative. Our just-published analysis of more than 1,000 articles from the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Los Angeles Times found a consistent bias, with words like “slaughter,” “massacre,” and “horrific” used almost exclusively when Israelis were killed, rather than Palestinians.
