The one thing our kitchen editor won’t travel without

When I dream of travel, I also dream of food. That’s what my itinerary always revolves around—and I don’t just mean checking out interesting restaurants. I also look up the nearest farmers’ market, dip into every good bakery I can find, and relish wandering through the local grocery store.

Years of eating in other cities has led me to the following travel essential, which I think more people should consider packing: food containers. I’m partial to a mix of tight-sealing plastic containers and sturdy silicone Stasher bags, but you could also just use zip-top freezer bags.

Time and time again, they prove their worth at every step in my travel routine. Before I leave, I load a few containers up with snacks for the road. By the time we arrive, the snacks have been decimated and the containers are free to fill up with new treats: a couple pastries, an open bag of chips, or a pint of fruit from the local market. The hard containers keep delicate items intact in ways that a paper bag never could, while the well-sealed Stashers prevent a chip explosion in my backpack.

I even get to bring home a couple edible souvenirs—if I don’t devour them on the plane, that is.
