Today, we’re pumped to announce our investment in Sunset.

Sunset is... awesome.

What they’re building: A powerful and compliant tool for shutting down tech businesses, saving founders and investors time, money, and stress.

They’re off to a great start, already selling to customers, with ambitious plans ahead.

Why we’re investing: Timing is everything, and Sunset’s founders (who’ve lived this problem firsthand) couldn’t be building this solution at a more critical time.

The vast majority of startups fail. In recent years, numerous tech layoffs and venture-backed startup shutdowns have made headline news, and the trend may be accelerating.

In all, hundreds of thousands of businesses (of all kinds) shut down every year. Of those that “make it,” a significant portion go on to be acquired. 

Whatever the case, dissolving a business is a very expensive, very long, “makes you wish you never started the damn thing to begin with” process...

Among other things, it involves:

• Withdrawing your corporate registration from each state
• Tax compliance (nothing to mess with)
• Decisions about old records, etc
• Capital redistributions
• Vendor termination
• Liquidations and asset sales
• Legal plans

Enter, Sunset.

The company handles the legal, accounting, and operational aspects of winding down. They’ve built an (increasingly automated) product that helps make the entire process much easier — allowing everyone involved to move on to what’s next, faster.

As we said, Sunset’s founders, Grant and Brendan, have lived these challenges, or what they call “a metric ton of the world’s worst chores,” firsthand.

Plus: They also see a near future where their product makes life easier for SMB owners whose businesses have to shut down or are acquired.

We think there’s an incredible opportunity here, and we’re pumped to have Sunset in our portfolio.
