🐝 The story behind Kathryn's offer: "When I was first starting out in my career I worked full time in a domestic violence shelter. The work was very difficult and often felt like a bandaid-- though we served a tremendous number of folks fleeing violence, we were only a respite point.
One day a woman came to our weekly staff meeting and introduced a participatory memoir writing process that she was leading. She explained that she had started with interviewing women in prisons and allowing them to tell their stories (for some, for the first time outside of a courtroom). What she discovered in this process was that 100% of the incarcerated women she spoke to had suffered from childhood physical or sexual trauma.
This led her to move a step back and begin working with women in shelters: giving them the opportunity to tell their stories on their own terms and be heard and witnessed. I got involved in this project for about a year and witnessed first hand the transformative power that storytelling and sharing has for both individual empowerment and social change.
Many of the women who were involved later joined the project as interviewers, saying that the experience had changed their lives.
Since then, over 15 years living in 5 different countries, my work as a feminist researcher and community builder has always been rooted in story-based tools for bringing feminist and decolonial theory into action.
I later had the privilege to obtain an MA in gender studies with a focus on oral history and have used interviews, life stories, and participatory community approaches for social justice causes, including gender-based violence, LGBTQ+ rights to joy and safety, migration, and tenant’s rights."
Reach out to Kathryn and explore our Reciprocity Hub directly in our global social impact community. And make sure to check out the upcoming incredible mentorship and networking events!
