What’s Going Down @ Google 📊

→ Here is a word cloud of Google’s recent investor meeting. “AI” was mentioned basically twice as much as the next closest word— as Nate Hake points out, “helpful content” didn’t get a single mention.

→ Looks like Google is dropping “perspectives”- or at least rebranding it- with the introduction of “Forums.”

→ Going into the weekend, Barry Schwartz dropped an update on the March 2024 Core/Spam update, noticing serious volatility.

→ If you’re a Semrush user, looks like SGE reporting is coming soon.

→ If you wanna get back to some basics on how SERPs can guide content, this Moz Whiteboard Friday video from this last week drops some helpful hints.

Social Media Round-up 📲

→ LinkedIn is about to drop some in-app puzzle-based gaming on its platform. That’s nice, given that its only previous game- “How to Ignore Annoying B2B DMs and Lame Posts”- was getting pretty old.

→ If you’re looking to up your Facebook game, this is a helpful guide that looks at the basics re: when to post and why. TLDR is “There are two best times to post on Facebook according to studies: 7 AM to 3 PM from Monday to Thursday and 5 PM to 1 AM from Friday to Sunday.” But it’s not so simple, as there are some other factors worth looking into.

→ Get ready to pour one out for BeReal, which never found a way to be useful to advertisers, and is on life support. Funny how that works.

AI Insight 🤖

→ At this point, one thing has become abundantly clear to anyone paying attention: analyzing the benefits and drawbacks of using AI in advertising isn’t a black-or-white situation. Whether it's personalization in the form of shopping recs, curated social media feeds, or voice-activated assistants, or AI being employed for efficiency, it's clear there's opportunity and risk involved. This piece takes a look at the whole picture of embracing AI in advertising, including breaking down the highs and the lows… For every Pro:

- streamlined ad creation process
- personalized ad copy and imagery
- automated campaign management

… there seems to be a con:
- data security and privacy concerns

- unhelpful without context

- lacks human creativity

This article wades through all of this, offering some solid advice.

→ This piece looks at why the “prediction that AI chatbots will cause a 25% drop in search volume by 2026 has zero chance of happening” and it’s pretty convincing, laying out its argument in seven simple points, including: “AI Search Engines Don’t Actually Exist,” “AI Search Engines Don’t Actually Exist,” and “True AI Search Engines Are Not Economically Viable.” Worth a read if you’re a skeptic looking to have your biases confirmed, or if you could use a healthy dose of AI skepticism.

→ MarketingWeek’s “AI: Beyond the Hype” series has been solid, and this piece looks at removing the ‘drudge work’ in the market research process.

→ Microsoft is now serving ads for Bing in Google Chrome in an attempt to get users to switch their default search engine to Bing. The strategy, however, is not super sound at the moment, as “employing ads that don’t resemble malware would likely be more productive.” Oof.
