Nancy Smith, 74, of Palo Alto, wrote in response to Tuesday's newsletter about saving during the pandemic: “Everyone here is continuing to pay their housecleaners and gardeners (and making impassioned pleas for others to do so as well) even though shelter-in-place doesn't allow those service folks to work...We are saving on Starbucks and movies, but our biggest entertainment expense has been season play subscriptions at several local theatres where we have been donating the value of the tickets back (and making extra donations as well to make sure these local groups don't go under).  Plus we are donating much extra to local charities, food banks, etc...I think it is worth at least looking at the moral/ethical implications for anyone who is still fortunate enough to be working with unchanged income.”

Thank you for sharing, Nancy! I couldn’t agree more. I didn’t have room to mention this last time, but I’ve decided to donate at least $300 a month, which is roughly the value of the monthly transit pass and gym membership that I’m not using. It’s important to support our communities during this time of great need. So far, I've given to a local food bank, the mayor's fund for New York City, and a relief fund for families of my son's school. What about you?
