No matter where you live, it’s important to get out and explore what’s nearby. While it can be tempting to always plan your getaways to far-off destinations, not only is jet setting expensive, it can mean missing out on some incredible experiences.

The ability to take day trips is one of the best things about living in London. There’s so much to discover within a couple hours of home. This past weekend, I returned to Bath, the Georgian city with ancient Roman roots I first visited just over a year ago. It was as beautiful as I remembered, but I had to organize what I was bringing along a bit differently this time. Since I wasn’t spending the night, I had to make sure I had everything I would need, come what may.

The three buys in this week’s edition all fall in line with my day trip essentials. They’re handy, but beautifully designed and versatile enough to suit a number of short sojourns.

It goes without saying perhaps that the pandemic changed the way many of us feel about being in public spaces. Where four years ago I may have had a more cavalier attitude about germs, I now make sure I always have hand sanitizer on me. The tricky part is that I’m sensitive to artificial fragrances, but Touchland’s vegan, cruelty-free hand sanitizer sprays, which are available in a variety of scents like Berry Bliss and Frosted Mint, don’t give me any issues no matter how often I spritz my digits. My personal favorite is Aloe You.

2. Rains Waterproof Backpacks (£69 and up)

If I had a pound for every Rains backpack I saw on an average day in London, I’d be able to buy four of them. Made from waterproof PU fabric, their backpacks make an excellent choice for day trips when you’re not sure if the weather will hold out. Available in a variety of sizes, they also hold all of your other must-haves, like your snacks, tech and beauty products. This Scandi brand was launched in 2012 by founders Philip Lotko, Daniel Brix and Kenneth Davids, and all of their products feature the same clean lines and functionality. Rainwear has never looked so cool.

3. Sorel Women’s ONA™ BLVD Classic Waterproof Sneaker (£110)

Comfortable shoes are a given for day trips. No one wants to go home limping or short some cash from an impromptu trip to the shoe store. But that doesn’t mean you have to resort to hiking boots in an urban setting. These sneakers from Sorel look just as good as your other kicks thanks to their suede and leather details, but with the added bonus of being waterproof. They also have a removable molded EVA footbed and a vulcanized rubber outsole. Wear them with jeans or a dress — either way, your feet will be protected from the elements and countless steps on uneven terrain.
