Write of Passage Weekly - Two Tips to Out-Write AI

No doubt you’ve felt the rush of AI-induced panic: 

“Will AI make my work irrelevant?”

“Should I even try to write online anymore?”

“I’ll never outsmart AI, so what’s the point?”

Once upon a time, these same questions kept us awake at night, too. (We’re a writing school, after all.) But we’ve learned how writers can “make it” in the age of AI, and we want to share two of our top tips with you. 

In a nutshell — no, AI isn’t going to make online writing irrelevant. But it will change the kind of writing that the Internet rewards. 

Let’s start with what we know: AI is smarter and faster than you. There’s no denying that ChatGPT can do all the things that humans can’t, like summarize the history of the pharmaceutical industry in mere seconds, or crank out 5,000 word articles in five minutes. 

What AI can’t do is put itself in your shoes. And as cheesy as that may sound, it’s become a stark reality. You’re the only person on the planet (robots included) who can articulate your lived experiences and unique ideas. One in seven billion. That statistic has never mattered more to writers than it does right now. 

Which means, you need to share what you know. 

1. Share Your Unique Perspective

Your leg-up on AI is your distinctiveness. Unique means memorable. Memorable means shareable. And shareable means you break through the noise and start grabbing people’s attention. 

If you want to make it as a writer in an AI-world, you need to differentiate yourself by leaning into your singularity. AI is smarter than you — so, don’t try to sound smart. Be useful instead. AI is faster than you — so, don’t prioritize speed or quantity. Focus on beauty instead.

But “being unique” isn’t enough. Your work needs to be exceptional. 

2. Create High-Quality Work

Right now, there’s a glut of mediocre writing in the world. People are craving high-quality ideas like never before. If you want to out-write AI, then you have to become a better writer. It’s that simple. 

Your writing style is a skill that can be sharpened down to every word on the page. Once you hone your craft, AI won’t be able to match you.
