The Shiny Dime Challenge

A Shiny Dime is a specific and surprising idea. It's the singular focus of a piece of writing. And it's a concept that will help you capture attention in a crowded world.

Hey writers,

Earlier this week, you learned to say one thing. Now, it’s time to put it into practice. Here’s your very first writing assignment of the Shiny Dime Challenge: 

What is a rule you live by, and why? 

As you choose a topic, think about your everyday life. What’s one value that’s extremely important to you? What’s one principle you implement on a daily basis? 

Remember: Don’t try to write your magnum opus. Your job is to communicate one idea clearly. That’s it. So, narrow your scope. And if you need some inspiration, here are some sample Shiny Dimes to kickstart your creativity: 

• “What you focus on will grow.”
• “Rejection is redirection.”
• “Treat others how you want to be treated.”
• “No rain, no flowers.”
• “Buy things, not experiences.”
• “If your dreams don’t scare you, they’re too small.”
• ​“So act that you use humanity, in your own person as well as in the person of any other, always at the same time as an end, never merely as a means.” (Oh, you don’t wake up thinking about Kant’s second formulation of the categorical imperative? Sure, it’s not a punchy one-liner, but it is specific and surprising — still a Shiny Dime.)

Keep in mind that your Shiny Dime doesn’t have to be a common motto. (In fact, it shouldn’t!) Try to choose a Shiny Dime that’s completely unique to you. One rule. One idea. You’ve got this. 

Some suggestions to help you get started:

• Shoot for around 500 words.
• Be specific.
• Don’t overthink it; just write!
