Claire Hughes-Johnson says in Scaling People that “a strategy should hurt”. Meaning that it should be so clear and taken so far that the trade-offs sting. The same is true for cultures. A truly stellar culture has bold traits and patterns. Good, talented people should occasionally take a look and say “woah, sorry that’s not for me - I don’t want to move at that pace/share results that publicly/do that much asynchronously/whatever the thing is....” These values need to be concentrated enough to get noticed. They also need to be serving everyone: the team, the clients and the business. If they serve only one or even two of these, that’s just a toxic pattern. This is not about hiring 100 of the same person. It means being strongly, nearly obnoxiously aligned on a *few* key, critical points and then building diverse strengths and perspectives around those.
