We Have a Few Contenders...

The massive wave of renovations that swept homes during the early 2020s left one undeniable transformation in its wake: the kitchen.

There have been a few milestones along the way. The green kitchen, for one, made a splash in 2020 and still has plenty of fans today. Kirsten Dunst’s eggplant-and-terracotta kitchen by AD100 talent Jane Hallworth appeared in AD in 2021, and keeps many in its grips (me included). Around the same time, designers opted to bring decor typically seen in other areas of the home—like table lamps—into culinary spaces. In 2022, AD PRO surveyed leading tastemakers about wood kitchens, double islands, and the rise of stainless steel. Last year, Billy Cotton’s gingham-filled English country kitchen for Lily Allen and David Harbour was one of the most talked-about rooms of 2023. And most recently, we’ve taken a look at the return of pass-through bars and the growing fondness for induction cooking.

As we approach the halfway mark of the 2020s, what stands out to you? I recommend digging into a few of the stories above—or below, where we mine intel from the pros who design for top chefs—before making up your mind.
