Flow State - Poppy Ackroyd
Welcome back to Flow State, your daily instrumental music newsletter. Paid subscribers get our private daily Spotify playlist, unlock the weekly Tuesday podcast, and keep the newsletter alive. You can upgrade to the paid tier here (20% off this week only). Good morning. Today we’re listening to Poppy Ackroyd, a pianist and composer from London. She’s one of the classically trained, electronically inclined artists who inspired Sophia Jani (yesterday’s rec).¹ We’re first playing Ackroyd’s 2017 album Sketches, which was put out on Björk’s label One Little Independent and consists of solo piano performances of original compositions. Then we’re playing her 2021 album, Pause, which is keys-driven with additional synthetic sounds. In her conversation with the inimitable 15Questions, she said, “I have read that the auditory system in the brain is closer to the part of it that regulates basic human emotions than the visual system and that the physical vibrations of music can also make the body experience something similar to the sensation of touch.” Sketches - Poppy Ackroyd (50m, no vocals) Pause - Poppy Ackroyd (50m, no vocals) Have a really nice Thursday. |
