Hardware acceleration drives VC returns in AI
Investors are scattering bets widely in the AI market, but only one category has been a reliable producer of exits for VC-backed companies, our latest Emerging Tech Research explains.

The IPO of Astera Labs, which makes AI hardware for data centers, continued that trend in the first quarter with a towering revenue multiple. That debut followed last year's blockbuster IPO of semiconductor specialist Arm. And there's more to come: Chipmaker Cerebras, last valued at $4 billion, is readying an IPO.

VC dealmaking levels out for gaming

Has SoftBank reached the end of its Vision Fund strategy?
(Jenna O'Malley/PitchBook News)
When SoftBank announced its earnings for the 2023 financial year, there were plenty of reasons for the Japanese conglomerate to be happy.

The group reported its second consecutive quarter of profit, and net asset value almost doubled from the previous financial year to a record 27.8 trillion Japanese yen (around $180 billion). The success of chipmaker Arm's IPO has helped to considerably narrow SoftBank's full-year loss.

But a sore spot remains for SoftBank in the form of its Vision Funds. The segment generated a loss of 167.3 billion yen for the full fiscal year, excluding the proceeds from Arm's IPO. In the last quarter of the period, the loss amounted to 389 billion yen. The question now is whether the Vision Funds have a role to play as SoftBank expands its focus to AI tech.

Dealmakers await their NFL kickoff
(Jenna O'Malley/PitchBook News)
Senior reporter Jessica Hamlin has been paying close attention to the NFL in recent months.

She's heard rumblings about fund managers preparing for a final call on a decision that stands between institutional investors and exposure to some of the most profitable sports franchises in the US.

The expected NFL ruling would allow firms like Arctos and RedBird Capital—two of the most prominent private firms with sports strategies—to acquire minority yet hefty chunks of NFL teams.
