Teachers and librarians, as classes across the world continue online, connecting students with poetry is more important than ever. We have received an incredible response to our 2020 Dear Poet project and an outpouring of letters from students writing to our Chancellors and Poets Laureate Fellows. In light of this response, we are extending the deadline for Dear Poet until May 31st

Below are a few additional resources to use in your digital classroom, as well as highlights from the education community.

We want to hear from you!

Thank you for your work bringing poetry into the classroom year-round. We would love to hear how you are teaching poetry in your virtual classrooms. Please send an email to education@poets.org and tell us about the lesson plans, activities, and assignments that you are using and finding helpful while you teach your students remotely. We may ask to feature your idea or activity in the Academy’s next educator newsletter.

Dear Poet is a multimedia project that invites young people in grades five through twelve to watch the videos of Chancellors and Poets Laureate Fellows reading one of their poems, then write letters in response. A group of teachers from across the country has created video guides for specific poems to help students relate and respond. Browse this playlist of their videos.

The 2020 Poem in Your Pocket Day will take place on Thursday, April 30. This year we encourage you to celebrate digitally.

We have also made a packet of poems especially for younger students and readers. Ask your students’ parents to print this special packet and instruct your students to draw an image from the poem in the white space.

Thank you for your work bringing poetry into your classroom. We’re happy to be able to offer hundreds of free lesson plans, essays, and other resources, and we wish you and your students good health and safety.
