Our ultimate guide to laptops

We’ve spent hundreds of hours testing the most promising laptops—from sleek ultrabooks to models under $500 to massive gaming laptops and beyond—to find the best ones for different tastes, needs, and budgets.

When testing Chromebooks, for example, we ran the full gambit of surfing the web: We checked our Gmail and Google Calendars, ran Slack, streamed music, worked in large spreadsheets, PDF files, and text documents, chatted on Zoom, and streamed videos from Netflix, Twitch, and YouTube. Only the strongest laptops could keep up.

Our laptop guide highlights the crème de la crème in every category—along with advice on how to choose which of our recommendations is right for you.

One last thing: It’s nice outside. Here’s how to move your office out there.

When warm weather and sunny skies beckon, it can be difficult to focus on anything indoors, especially clickety-clacking. Taking that work outside, even for just a little while, can help make even the most tedious tasks feel a little more special.

Our home-office experts have rounded up their best advice on how to move your office outside—and the gear they recommend to help you stay comfortable and productive. No more battling laggy Wi-Fi or racing against dwindling batteries.
