Generally, I've heard common wisdom go something like this:

​

Core product/offering (70%) Your bread and butter. The stuff that's making you cash right now. Keep it running smoothly. No big risks, just smart improvements.

​

New product/offering (20%) Test out new stuff. Not a huge investment, but enough to see if it’s got legs.

​

Crazy Ideas (10%) The wild bets. The moonshots. A small slice of the budget for potentially high-risk, high-reward projects.

​

Seems dated in a way, but there's also a lot of sense in it to keep rebalancing the budget the same way we do our portfolios.
