That's because understanding the process and knowing where to focus months or even years in advance will help you maximize your sale when it's time.

With that in mind, we've collected 23 podcasts you can learn from now.

They cover how to build a sellable business, how to sell, and even how to buy a business (because hearing from buyers is insightful for sellers, too).

Did you know I offer free calls for founders who'd like to sell their business?

I've done 100s of these calls since launching this business two-and-a-half years ago. It's one of my favorite parts of this job. I get to meet members of this community, learn about what you're building, and help you figure out the best steps toward a sale.

I took a break from founder calls earlier this year to focus on other priorities. And I probably won't do calls in July or August because working time is so limited with the kids out of school.

So I'm opening a bunch of slots for June. Grab it while you can!

The best fit for these conversations — the founders I can help the most —are those who:

• Want to sell in the next year
• Are bringing in at least $250,000 in revenue
• Have not yet listed the business for sale with a broker or marketplace

Behind the business (of TGA)

I'm hearing whispers of M&A activity starting to pick back up.

But know what I'm also hearing?

😬 That there's a gulf between what founders expect to sell for and how much buyers are willing to pay.

Many sellers are still hung up on the high multiples of 2020 and 2021, expecting to sell for a high price.

But buyers know the finish line has been redrawn, and they're no longer willing to pay the multiples we saw during the pandemic.

Lots of sellers WANT to sell; I talk to them every day. But it's hard to wrap your head around selling for less than you could a few years ago. So these sellers either go to market and can't get the price they want, or they hold onto the business, hoping the market will improve.

But here's the thing: We probably aren't going to return to the glory days of 2020-2021. While we can still hope to see the market improve, where we are now might actually be closer to the new normal.

So what's a seller to do?

A few ideas:

👉🏼 1. Get back to basics.

Understand what drives valuations, and focus on those pieces of your business. (If you need a primer, our 1-hour course will bring you up to speed quickly.)

Increasing revenue and profit is a good place to start. But this might be easier said than done, as many business owners have had a rough few years. If that's you, go easy on yourself and know you aren't alone.

👉🏼 2. See your business from the buyer's perspective.

Know what's appealing to buyers right now and, well, all the time? Buying a business that's a "sure thing."

How can you reduce risk so a buyer sees your business that way? Maybe find a way to make your revenue recurring, or decrease the brand's reliance on you personally. Both of these moves make the business more appealing, which will increase demand for the company and drive up your sale price.

👉🏼 3. Don't wait too long to sell.

When you want to sell and move on, but your business won't command the price you're hoping for, that's a tough position to be in.

Here's my question to you: Do you have the mental stamina to keep going and get the business where it needs to be?

If you have the strength to keep going, go for it!

Some founders push past the point where they're effective, and end up selling for less than they might have originally.

If you're already burned out, you might be better off selling now, rather than trying to muscle through.
