COVID-19 Layoffs Tracker

Tens of thousands of people have been laid off from startup and tech companies in the past two months. If you happen to be hiring or looking to meet great talent, this layoffs tracker features over 300 startups that have laid off more than 30,000 employees since early March. Similarly, if you're looking for work opportunities, there is a tab listing companies that are still hiring. Check it out here

41% of Global Startups Have Less Than 3 Months of Cash

It's a grim statistic: 41% of startups around the globe have less than three months' worth of cash available. Another 24% have only 4-6 months worth of cash on hand. It hints at a fragile ecosystem that will undoubtedly lead to many startups shuttering. Here's a sobering look at how COVID-19 is leading to terminations, fundraising derailment, budget cuts, and more.

 Product
Products Over Projects

There are two primary ways companies develop software. The first is project-based, which revolves around temporary, build-only teams. The second is product-based, which utilizes longer lasting teams to work on a persistent business issue. This article focuses on why the latter might be the more effective path long-term. This is a thorough read, and one worth bookmarking

Spotify Doesn't Use Its Agile Model—and You Shouldn't, Either

Spotify is known for its "Squad" model, but here's the thing: The company actually never fully implemented it. Some aspects of the model, like the "full stack" agile team concept, worked well. Others—such as the matrix management of software engineers—fell flat. Ultimately, the model solved the wrong problem, focused too heavily on team autonomy, and assumed collaboration was a competency. This is a valuable read about why the model didn't work—and what you can learn from Spotify's mistakes

How I Helped Reposition a Database Product That Went On to Make $1 Billion in Revenue

Early on in April Dunford's career, she was tasked with calling 100 customers who were using a product that her company wanted to kill because it wasn't getting traction. During these calls, she found a small handful of them were outliers—and they all appeared to be using the product in a similar way. Instead of killing the product, April's customer research eventually led to a complete repositioning of the product. It ended up selling like crazy, making $1 billion in revenue at its peak. This is an example of customer research and product repositioning at its best.

Sales and Marketing Strategy in the Time of COVID-19

No one has a playbook for how to best market and sell during this unprecedented time. But, there has also never been more freedom to experiment. I love that this article is divided into three sections: things you should reconsider or stop, things you may want to try, and things you should keep doing—now more than ever. My favorites: switch from a position of selling to one of teaching, and boil down events and content.

 Growth

The New Rules of Growth vs. Profitability

It's been a standard practice in the startup world for a while now to prioritize growth over profitability. I think that is finally going to shift in this new climate. The NFX team put together a helpful guide to support founders in building iconic businesses during challenging times. It starts with survival—understanding your cash position and extending your runway as much as possible. Then it moves into how you can thrive by taking advantage of cheap growth, and ultimately, how to juggle the inevitable balancing act between profitability and growth

Another Pandemic Woe: Zoom Fatigue

First, Zoom became our social lifeline. Then, it became the object of privacy and security concerns. Now, it's physically and psychologically zapping many of us. If you've found videoconferencing exhausting lately, this explains why. Just know you're not alone.

 Tip of the Week
How to Instill a Sense of Urgency in Your Business

In my experience, some of the most successful startup CEOs I know are the ones that maintain a sense of urgency in their business. They react quickly to market changes, develop new products all the time, and talk to their customers regularly—not just when problems arise.

On this week's episode of The Startup Chat, Steli and I talk about the meaning of urgency, why it's particularly important in times of crisis, and how to maintain a sustainable intensity in the way you run your startup.
