The Shiny Dime Challenge

A Shiny Dime is a specific and surprising idea. It's the singular focus of a piece of writing. And it's a concept that will help you capture attention in a crowded world.

Hey writers,

This week, you learned how to craft a good coined phrase. Now, it’s time to put it into practice. Here’s this week’s writing prompt: 

What comes easily to you that’s hard for others?

Think of your unique skills and obsessions. Do you have a knack for ice skating? Can you cook a mean beef Wellington? Maybe you find it easy to give advice to friends, or maybe you find it easy to explain neurochemistry. Focus on something that comes naturally to you, and teach your reader about it.

Make it distinct and offbeat. Write as an authority. You’re the expert. And, as always, center your whole piece on one specific and surprising idea — your Shiny Dime. Finally, (you guessed it) turn your Shiny Dime into a coined phrase. Here’s a classic example: 

Shiny Dime: “Treat others how you want to be treated.” 

Coined phrase: “The Golden Rule” 

Remember that a great coined phrase is:

• Lean, not long-winded. It’s easy to drop in conversation. 
• Phonetic, not flat. It’s fun to say out loud.
• Mysterious, not mundane. It piques interest without giving anything away.

If you find yourself getting stuck, then simplify, simplify, simplify. How would you explain this concept to your friend by the pool? How would you introduce this idea to your coworkers at happy hour? Find your Shiny Dime, then give it a catchy name. Coin a phrase.
