If there was any doubt, there’s none now: The Supreme Court has become an unabashedly right-wing political machine, untethered by precedent, text, ethics, or judicial restraint in its pursuit of power. In a matter of days, they handed the president sweeping criminal immunity, gutted the power of agencies like the EPA and FDA to protect the public, made it easier to pay off local officials, greenlighted the criminalization of homelessness, and more. Yet as this radical revolution unfolds before our eyes, too many media outlets still portray the Supreme Court as a sacred temple of jurisprudence, turning a blind eye to the billion-dollar dark-money campaign to hijack the judiciary and the torrent of gifts and payouts going to the justices themselves. Democracy cannot survive without an honest, independent judiciary, and clear-eyed investigative reporting is absolutely vital to restore the legitimacy of the Supreme Court. That’s why the fiercely independent journalism of The Intercept is so needed right now. We refuse to treat the Supreme Court justices with kid gloves. Our reporters are working day and night to expose the corporations and billionaires funding the right-wing takeover of the judiciary. And we’re calling bullshit on the conservative legal movement’s fallacious claims about fealty to the Constitution and opposition to judicial activism. But in this era of newsroom layoffs and shutdowns, The Intercept is counting on our community of readers to help keep our reporters on the Supreme Court beat.
