Israel has now killed nearly 40,000 Palestinians in Gaza, according to conservative estimates, with the full support and military backing of the United States. With famine breaking out across the strip, the death toll is sure to keep rising.

But nine months since the war started, the U.S. media has largely lost interest, with the presidential election dominating news coverage.

And just before the July 4 recess, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to ban the State Department from citing statistics on the number of dead and injured from the Gaza Health Ministry, the only official entity tracking the death toll in Gaza.

Since Israel launched its assault on Gaza, it’s become increasingly difficult for journalists to report on the war’s impacts on Palestinian civilians.
