Nearly 40,000 dead and 90,000 injured. This must not be concealed.

We’re doubling down, partnering with courageous reporters on the ground to make sure the death and suffering in Gaza cannot be ignored.

Israel has now killed nearly 40,000 Palestinians in Gaza, according to conservative estimates, with the full support and military backing of the United States. With famine breaking out across the strip, the death toll is sure to keep rising.

But nine months since the war started, the U.S. media has largely lost interest, with the presidential election dominating news coverage.

And just before the July 4 recess, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to ban the State Department from citing statistics on the number of dead and injured from the Gaza Health Ministry, the only official entity tracking the death toll in Gaza.

The Intercept refuses to turn away from the ongoing catastrophe in Gaza. In fact, we’re doubling down, partnering with courageous reporters on the ground to make sure the death and suffering in Gaza cannot be ignored.

Don’t let the media turn the page on Gaza. Donate today to continue The Intercept’s hard-hitting investigative reporting.

Since Israel launched its assault on Gaza, it’s become increasingly difficult for journalists to report on the war’s impacts on Palestinian civilians.

The Israeli Defense Forces have been accused of intentionally targeting journalists, 1 in 10 Palestinian reporters on the ground have been killed, and Israel has banned nearly all foreign reporters from entering the strip.

Meanwhile, U.S.-based news outlets have engaged in a pattern of self-censorship. CNN’s policy is to run nearly every story about Israel and Palestine past a bureau in Jerusalem that operates under the shadow of an Israeli military censor. The few U.S. journalists who have dared to challenge Israel have been largely sidelined or in some cases fired.

In this environment of censorship and unspeakable human suffering, The Intercept has refused to back down. Our D.C.-based journalists are doggedly reporting on the actions of the Biden administration and Congress, and we’re partnering with reporters on the ground to ensure the truth gets out and those in power can be held accountable.

The Intercept’s fearless, adversarial approach to journalism has never been more necessary than it is right now — and we’re appealing to you, our readers, to help us continue this vital work.
