Flow State - Bill Evans
Welcome back to Flow State, your daily instrumental music newsletter. Paid subscribers get a daily Spotify playlist, unlock the weekly Tuesday podcast, and keep this newsletter alive: Good morning. Today we’re listening to Bill Evans, an American jazz pianist from New Jersey. Somehow we haven’t recommended him since 2019. Evans was born in 1929 and in the mid-’50s moved to New York City, where he recorded Kind of Blue as part of Miles Davis’s sextet.¹ Shortly thereafter he struck out on his own, forming a trio and releasing dozens of records until his death in 1980. We’re playing two Evans records today. First is From Left to Right from 1971, on which Evans plays a Fender Rhodes electric piano and Steinway piano, sometimes at the same time (as the cover depicts). We’re also playing Conversations with Myself from 1963, which features multiple tracks of Evans’ piano overdubbed and won him his first Grammy. From Left to Right - Bill Evans (50m, no vocals) Conversations with Myself - Bill Evans (40m, no vocals) Have a great Thursday. |
