Startup Resources - 🛠 Tried to keep it Covid free. But no.

Hello πŸ‘‹

I've had an idea. A simple one that could help both of us. I'm keen to hear what you think.

What about adding a small "classifieds" section towards the end of the email? Some short simple, text based ads. Maybe 4 or 5 each week.

They'd be affordable at $20 each. So would allow early startups to get in front of an audience without spending too much.

I've seen it work well in other newsletters and it would help keep the lights on here.

What do you think?

The audience is entrepreneurs at early stages, makers, and freelancers stepping up to starting a business.

Would you place an ad? Hit reply and let me know.

Moving on...

Last issue's most clicked resource was the article How to validate a startup idea using a pre-launch landing page and less than $500 in PPC spend.

But only by 1 click 😲 Close second was the Probstack community.

On to this week's tools and articles...

πŸ›  Tools

Bonjoro - Personalized Video

The other day I was listening to a podcast about email marketing and how you can use personalized video to increase engagement. Bonjoro was the recommended tool.

Various use cases. But one that stood out was sending out a personalized video to new subscribers and new users. Just whip out your phone, record video and send.

It doesn't scale well, but at the beginning, making that extra effort could help connect with true fans.

There's a free tier to try it out (which I might start doing in the near future).

Coronaaah! Fight COVID 19 with a Website Audit

Sumit Hegde builds conversion focused websites. And he's very good at it (check out the content on his main site).

He's the kind of person you want auditing your site making recommendations for improvements. And he also wants to help out Covid-19 charities.

So combine the two and you get a full on audit of your site (for $300 - he's a pro) and he'll donate the full amount to the Covid charity of your choice.

You get to help a charity and should see a higher ROI on your website visitors.

Favicon.io - Favicon Generator

If you want to get something up really quickly and don't want to waste time with a logo yet, what do you do about a favicon?

You still have to fire up your favorite photoshop clone to create something.

But not now - this nifty little generator will create something from text, an image or you can use an emoji. Very fast and downloads all the right file sizes.

It doesn't cost anything πŸ€˜

Quitting my job to make $5000/month with side-projects

The story of a couple of indie hackers starting to see some early traction with their email tool, Mailbrew. Interesting to hear from founders who are right in the thick of battle and not yet made it.

"In late-2018, Fabrizio and Franceso quit their full-time jobs to create Superlinear and start launching apps. Their current focus is their recently-launched SaaS, Mailbrew, which allows users to create email digests on things they love. Mailbrew is now making $2k/month."

Why Startups Should Generate Absolutely Crazy Ideas Every Single Day

A lot of startup thinking (I believe rightly) focuses on audience and problem instead of wildly plucking ideas out the sky.

But at some point there has to be an idea for a solution. Some kind of creativity.

To get good at it you need to exercise those idea muscles in the brain. I'm sure that's the correct anatomical term πŸ§

"The more cynical among us entrepreneurs tend to look down on ideas. Ideas are cheap; everyone has a million of them, and they mean nothing until you execute on them. But we shouldn’t forget how important perpetual ideation is to the process of building a product."

πŸ“° Newsletter

Young Makers

A newΓ©y launched newsletter that I subscribed to last week. Best described in the words of the creator, Gabriel Chuan:

"At Young Makers, we interview young makers and share their stories, the reasons they succeed and the passion projects they are working on.

In each interview, we ask them how they started, how are they getting their first users, how are they getting their first profits"

Just 2 issues in but they've been very well written with plenty of insightful takeaways. I like the interview style format and the summarized intro to each email.

If you're new to building projects and trying to turn them into income (young or young at heart), then check out the previous issues and subscribe.
