Why is Congress applauding the man responsible for Israel’s inhumane war?

Benjamin Netanyahu is wanted for war crimes. Congress just gave him a standing ovation.

On Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stood in the well of the U.S. House of Representatives and received multiple standing ovations, despite a likely arrest warrant for war crimes at the International Criminal Court.

As Netanyahu basked in sustained bipartisan applause in Washington, D.C., children in Gaza were starving to death, gripped by a famine caused by Israel’s ongoing blockade of food, water, and medical supplies.

And while members of Congress cheered for the Israeli premier, the Israel Defense Forces were implementing a new wave of ground attacks on Khan Younis, forcing 150,000 people to once again flee areas previously deemed “humanitarian safe zones.”

In the face of these ongoing atrocities backed by billions in U.S. military aid to Israel, The Intercept’s hard-hitting reporting is needed now more than ever.

Your donations make this reporting possible. Will you donate $5 to help support The Intercept’s ongoing coverage of Israel’s war on Gaza?

More than 39,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023 — the majority women and children — and even those horrific numbers almost certainly underestimate the true death toll.

Yet the devastation of Gaza has mostly disappeared from the front page and cable news, and as the U.S. presidential election approaches this November, the war will receive less and less attention.

Meanwhile, the few U.S. journalists with the independence and expertise to challenge Israel have been largely sidelined — or in some cases, fired.

But while other U.S. news outlets lose interest in Israel’s war on Gaza and uncritically pass along Israeli propaganda, we’re doubling down, partnering with courageous reporters in the war zone to expose the truth, while hiring additional political reporters to help hold the Biden administration accountable for enabling the slaughter.

The Intercept is committed to reporting on the war in Gaza without shading the facts or providing political cover for any politician or government — but this reporting relies on donations from readers like you.

That’s why we’re asking you today: Please donate $5 to help The Intercept continue to report the truth about Israel’s U.S.-backed war in Gaza.
