EDITOR’S NOTE

Happy Sunday. As someone who’s lived exclusively in athletic shorts for the past two months, I have deep respect for those still committed to taking fashion risks. This week, I’m giving credit to Sydney Sweeney’s baby blue knee-high stockings (yes, in the summer), Julia Fox’s couture take on a Gap shirtdress, and Addison Rae’s velvet (again, summer) Madonna-inspired cone bra top with high-waisted pants. Although, nothing quite compares to Heidi Klum’s, um, perplexing (and very baggy) not-jeans-but-not-jorts look or Anne Hathaway’s head-turning tie-dye wetsuit. That said, I am looking forward to tossing my flip-flops and joining the “clogs renaissance,” led by our fearless footwear leader Jennifer Lawrence. Which, I will obviously be combining with Selena Gomez’s fall-coded “dirty martini” manicure. Olives not included.

Deeply important information

💀 According to The Financial Times, it’s “time to ditch your leggings.” Sorry, but you can pry them from our cold dead hands.

👰‍♀️ Have weddings become too casual? Exhibit A: Couples are texting their wedding invitations. Exhibit B: Grooms are wearing shorts to the ceremony.

🚨 Paging Snooki: The pouf hairstyle is supposedly making a comeback. But if you really want to make a statement — or just confuse people — try pairing your look with some very futuristic “Y3K” makeup.

🐶 Shout out to Dogue for being the Vogue spin-off we never knew we needed. Also, for giving us adorable dogs in cowboy hats (specifically, Ayo Edebiri’s Chihuahua mix, Gromit).

🏕️ The hottest humblebrag of the summer? Apparently having your kid be named the camp “color war” captain.

I can't look away.
How to board the plane in a demure and respectful way

After a very green, very “brat summer,” the internet is officially in its “very demure, very mindful” era. Well, for this week, anyway. For those who haven’t fallen into the TikTok black hole: Earlier this month, TikTok creator Jools Lebron (aka @joolieannie) posted a video offering advice on how to look “very demure” and “very mindful” at the office. And while Merriam-Webster would have you think otherwise, Lebron isn’t talking about being reserved or modest. For her, being demure is more about being cutesy, respectable, and considerate — an attitude that, as Lebron has demonstrated, can be applied to all sorts of situations, from attending a drag show to applying deodorant to curing the midnight munchies. Calmly walking through the airport with a portable fan? Very demure, very mindful. The increasingly messy It Ends With Us press tour? Not so much.

It was only a matter of time before demure took on a life of its own, with creators demure-ifying all aspects of their lives (see: the most demure way to eat McDonald’s and do the walk of shame). Celebs like Lindsay Lohan (alongside Jamie Lee Curtis) and Kim Kardashian have also hopped on the trend as have brands — we see you, Chili’s and Netflix. All of which has led some to suggest that Brat Summer’s natural successor is Demure Fall. It’s probably too soon to tell — though, if this Instagram post from the NYC Department of Sanitation is any indication, demure’s demise may be even quicker than brat’s. No matter how long the trend lasts, Lebron — who says the success of her viral catchphrase will finance the rest of her gender transition — has made a point to credit the “demure divas” who have “paved the way” for her, including fellow trans creators Selyna Brillare and Devin Halbal, and ballroom legend Venus Xtravaganza. Very demure behavior, indeed.

Need something to watch
Emily in Paris season 4

The Olympics may be over, but we’re already back in France — this time, for the fourth season of Netflix’s Emily in Paris, which came out on Thursday. For those who need a refresher: Season 3 saw Emily (Lily Collins) bid “au revoir” to Savoir and join Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) — who, some argue, is the real star of the show — at her new marketing firm. Meanwhile, true to form, Emily finds herself in a messy love triangle with her British boyfriend, Alfie (Lucien Laviscount), and hot chef Gabriel (Lucas Bravo), who, to make matters more complicated, is expecting a baby with Emily’s friend, Camille (Camille Razat). Now, after a very dramatic season finale (picture: an engagement-party-turned-impromptu-wedding disaster), Emily has to navigate the fall-out — so prepare for plenty of ill-advised personal and professional decisions, questionable Franglais, and wild sartorial choices.

Cucumber Guy on TikTok

Forget OOTD. TikTok is all in on COTD…or, cucumber of the day. For those who aren’t familiar with “Cucumber Guy,” we’ll explain: Over the last few weeks Logan Moffitt has risen to TikTok fame, thanks to his creative (and, it must be said, sometimes chaotic) cucumber salad concoctions. That includes salmon cream cheese everything bagel cucumber salad, cucumber cereal (apparently, it’s the “best hangover cure”), and jalapeño popper cucumber salad — often prepared using his signature method of filling a deli quart container to the brim and shaking it. Because, according to the 23-year-old, “sometimes you need to eat an entire cucumber,” and salads happen to be the perfect vehicle for doing so. While it’s uncertain what recipe Moffitt will whip up next (he’s considering, of all things, desserts), at least we know he’s very hydrated.

Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez isn’t a regular stepmom. She’s a cool stepmom. So cool, in fact, that she appears to have lent her pink two-toned Dolce & Gabbana dress — which she wore for a Valentine’s Day date with Ben Affleck — to her stepdaughter, Violet Affleck. (In true Gen Z fashion, Violet paired the flowy dress with some sensible sneakers and crew socks.) While it is possible that JLo and Violet each own the dress (perhaps it was a stepmommy-and-me look), we prefer to believe that Violet raided her stepmom’s closet. In which case, we have some recs for pieces she should steal, or, uh, borrow next. Obviously, the iconic Versace gown (aka, the dress that “created Google Images”), but also the mint green Jackie Kennedy Onassis-esque dress that JLo wore to the 2003 Oscars, her “dripping in ice” look for the 2019 Met Gala, this giant bow gown that resembles a Christmas present, and this sparkly, tangerine crop top with a matching skirt. All of which, we admit, are not exactly fit for walking around Yale, where Violet is reportedly headed in the fall. But the extremely ‘00s velour Juicy Couture tracksuit JLo wore in the “I’m Real” music video? That was made for lounging in a dorm room.

Help, my kid needs back-to-school clothes.
kids wearing Old Navy clothes

They’ve outgrown last year’s wardrobe, have very specific ideas of what’s cool, and your wallet is panicking. Don’t worry: Old Navy is here to help. Their kid-approved, Y2K-inspired styles prove that everything old is definitely new again. Fill your child’s closet with graphic tees, wide-leg jeans, skorts, and cargo pants. Plus, they’ve got accessories like lunch bags and canvas backpacks featuring some familiar faces that’ll transport you right back to the early 2000’s. BRB, stocking up.*
