European VC valuations on the path to recovery
Europe's early-stage market continued to see growth in median valuations in the first half of the year, while recovery in price tags for more mature startups has been slower. The overall value of the region's unicorns reached an all-time high, driven in part by AI's momentum, according to our Q2 2024 European VC Valuations Report.

Exit valuations have also improved—barring the median for public listings, which have included a negligible number for VC-backed companies. With further rate cuts anticipated this year, the outlook for European VC valuations is expected to continue to improve.

Drones help keep agtech dealmaking aloft
VC dealmaking in the agtech industry has fallen below last year's levels—and our analysts project the $1.1 billion raised across 147 deals in Q2 2024 won't be enough to catch up this year. But some segments within the sector have seen less dramatic declines, including drones and imagery analytics.

Agriculture drones can be optimized for tasks such as health monitoring of livestock or crops, field mapping, and spraying, according to our recent Emerging Tech Research. They can also play a role in reducing costs and waste.

Priced out of the AI bidding war
(Julia Midkiff/PitchBook News)
In the VC world, there are the rare founders who carry a certain mystique about them—like the founder of Ceramic, a stealth startup.

From her research with John McCarthy, one of the pioneers of AI, to her role as VP of engineering for AI at Google, CEO Anna Patterson has a resume that reads like the platonic ideal of a technical founder. So it was no surprise that NEA, Ceramic's lead investor, priced the startup at a $60 million post-money valuation in its first funding round, according to a person familiar with the deal.

Dogfighting among VCs vying to access premier founders and the hottest AI rocket ships is common. A combination of AI exuberance, fear of missing out and shiny new mega-funds have created an environment where pre-revenue AI companies can almost set the price.

VC sees growing opportunity in data observation
The infrastructure SaaS sector has seen relatively steady growth in total VC deal value over the last several quarters—hitting $3.4 billion in Q2 2024, according to our recent Emerging Tech Research. Exits are also on the rise, with 29 already recorded in the first half of 2024, compared to 31 in all of 2023.

Startups that focus on data management, observation and monitoring are helping to fuel the surge. Our analysts cover companies such as Monte Carlo that specialize in data observability to improve data pipelines.
