One week left: Submit your manuscript to the 2025 First Book Award

Did you know that Alberto Ríos won this prize in 1981?

And that Christopher GilbertSuji Kwock Kim, Matt Rasmussen, Mai Der Vang, Jenny Xie, Threa Almontaser, and Sara Daniele Rivera are also recipients?

Since the Academy established the First Book Award in 1975, the prize has helped launch the careers of poets who went on to:
  • become National Book Award finalists,
  • receive fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts,
  • join the Academy of American Poets’ Board of Chancellors,
  • get shortlisted for the Pulitzer Prize—and more.
The deadline for submitting to the 2025 Academy of American Poets First Book Award is September 1, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern. To submit, visit: https://poets.org/academy-american-poets/prizes/first-book-award.

The winner of the 2025 First Book Award will receive:
  • $5,000,
  • publication by Graywolf Press in 2025,
  • a six-week, all-expenses-paid residency at Civitella Ranieri in Umbria, Italy, and
  • a feature in both American Poets magazine and on Poets.org, which reaches millions of readers each year.
In addition, the Academy of American Poets will purchase and send thousands of copies of the book to its members, which will make it one of the most widely distributed poetry books of the year.
