Paper Mario The Origami King

Hi, here's issue #181 of Switch Weekly, with a look over this week's Nintendo news and a peek at what games are coming out in the next seven days. Plenty to get into this week!

Oh boy, Nintendo sure surprised us with the announcement of Paper Mario: The Origami King — the trailer dropped on Thursday, and the way in which Nintendo revealed the game got nearly as much chatter as the game itself. With no E3 to speak of, and the possibility of no summer Direct on the cards, just posting a trailer, straight-up, with no pre-promotion caught many enjoyably off-guard. The timing of this kinda works out though, as yes, we know Nintendo will have something to show off during the peak summer months, and as many are now starting to wind down their insane playtimes with Animal Crossing — folks are looking ahead for next Nintendo hit. The release calendar from Nintendo is looking a little empty, so I reckon this (coming out in July) is soon enough to keep folks happy until we know what else we've got to look forward to.

In other news, I've just started playing The Wonderful 101 on Switch. Not really got my teeth into it yet, but it's hitting the eShop next week (for all of those who didn't back the Kickstarter). I've also been playing aerial combat shooter Jet Lancer — my reviews are linked up in the issue below.

I've seen a fair few new subscribers join in the last few days, as such (and this applies to all subscribers really) I'd love to know where you found out about the newsletter. Please do hit reply and let me know.

Oh, and thanks to all of those who replied to last week's email letting me know what game you'd last completed. Remember, you can always hit reply and share your thoughts, comments, etc — always down for a chat. 😊

Next week sees just over 15 games hitting the eShop, including two golf games, the aforementioned Platinum port and more. Plenty of games are on sale right now too, so it's worth taking a look through the store.

Finally, I just want to put Switch Player on your radar — it's a monthly print magazine covering the Switch and it's just hit issue 40. It's well worth checking out.

As ever, a big thanks for reading — enjoy the issue, and I'll catch you next week,
Chris ✌️

Paper Mario: The Origami King - Announcement trailer — Out on July 17th. I've not played a Paper Mario game since the GameCube's Thousand Year Door, so I guess I'm overdue revisiting this series! Come and discuss what you think of the trailer and your history with the series on the Switch Weekly Discord.

REVIEW The Wonderful 101 Remastered doesn’t try to fix what wasn’t broken — " a fantastically eccentric action game that, although not without its flaws". This review from Nintendo World Report is more middling in its praise, whereas GameSpot felt this 'remaster' doesn't stand the test of time.

REVIEW Jet Lancer — Here's my review of this aerial shooter, which gave off strong 90s SEGA vibes with a mix of Advance Wars. I really enjoyed it. There's also a four-minute video version if you'd prefer.

Chris Brandrick // Switch Weekly

REVIEW Huntdown — "a delightfully detailed and expertly crafted throwback to old-school run n' gun arcade shooters".

PJ O'Reilly // Nintendo Life

REVIEW Ion Fury — "not only an incredible love letter to ‘90s first-person shooters; it’s a great first-person shooter in its own right".

John Rairdin // Nintendo World Report

REVIEW Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Mega Mix

James Galizio // Nintendo Insider
