🌍Day in the life of a social impact leader in The Bloom's community:
Earlier this month, Sisters in Climate facilitated a storytelling workshop in Kakuma which welcomed 12 young women living in the Kakuma Refugee Camp in northern Kenya. The workshop was organized in partnership with the Refugee ChangeMakers Network who supported the mobilization of women in Kakuma — and all who attended are aspiring writers, photographers, content creators, and filmmakers who understand firsthand what it means to be forcibly displaced from one’s home country and what living like a second-class citizen in Kenya feels like. As I prepared for the workshop, I was intentional in coordinating a space of learning, sharing, storytelling, and sisterhood — and to my pleasant surprise, all women were receptive to this format. By the end of the workshop, it was clear that each one felt encouraged to use resources available to share stories of women’s resilience and capability in written, visual, and multimedia formats. Specifically, the workshop achieved one big goal: equipping the women refugees with fundamental storytelling tools to better communicate Africa’s diverse refugee stories.
A lesson I am personally carrying forward is that "refugee" is simply a title given to a people, but it doesn't define them and there are many who are using the term to change the narrative of what it means to be a refugee. I am also encouraged to keep using my superpower and privilege to support more women who have the dream but need the tools to get to their desired destination. 👀 BONUS: peek into the lives of social impact leaders who joined The Bloom's community this week:

☀️Ada: hi! my workplace has a professional development benefit that i have yet to use this year. do you have any workshops/courses/certifications you've taken that you recommend? i have a wide array of interests so share it all!
🌵Lara: I'm writing about solid waste management and digital literacy. Do you know someone who can speak on these matters? I'd love to learn from experts and get valuable insights. I have no professional background on these subjects so it's important for me to talk to experts who are. Both stories are solutions-focused 💞 They'll be published in Diinsider Life and cross-promoted on our socials with 30,000+ followers and newsletter with 1,000+ subs. It's a great opportunity to get your name out there and build thought leadership.
🍄Déborah: I'm a first generation Haitian American who decided to leave the US several times in my adult life. Currently, I live in Quito, Ecuador where I've been for the past four years. I'd like to share more about the journey with you and invite others who have taken the leap to move away from the familiar - mainly in the form of immigration or expatriation.

organization partner
The Bloom is more than a newsletter: we're a global movement. We partner with social impact organizations committed to the movement, and mobilizing resources to underserved communities 🤎
Whether you're reading The Bloom searching for your next job opportunity, or here for more general career inspiration, there's one skill we tenaciously recommend all bloomers refine: collaboration.
More than ever hiring managers and organizations are looking to work with with leaders who are not just "fitting the need" or a laundry-list of fancy titles, but people who they enjoy working alongside 🤍 That's why we encourage anyone, whether you want to improve your leadership skills, or stand out more in your job search to register for Spring's program on Reimagining Collaboration that supports activists and changemakers to grow as collaborators 🐝
The program infuses facilitation tools and techniques with the depth and the heart of what it means for us as humans to work collectively—supporting participants to recognize their unique gifts as collaborators, while practicing and nurturing new facilitation capacities.
Past participants of the program like Greenpeace, UN Women, and youth climate justice activists have benefited from the way Spring integrates different methodologies, from storytelling to somatics, that can support people to stay present and connected, and create clarity even in moments of tension.
If you lead meetings, steward partnerships, nurture coalitions, or are just curious about how people work together, you might want to check out Reimagining Collaboration.
Our recommendation is to start by reading about the diverse facilitators from across the world who lead the program, like Budhita Kismadi. She's an Indonesian community activist who will be delivering the program in October – Budhita caught our attention for her intersectionality and twisty career journey – just like most of us bloomers 😉
If you’d like to connect with Spring to learn more about their program, you can reach out directly at facilitation@springstrategies.org. They work to make their programs financially accessible, so get in touch if cost is a barrier.
