Anne-Sharlene explores how wellness can be contextualized to the realities of African women through her NPC, Kurapa Moyo. She's a Digital Communications and Research enthusiast working on gender, youth, and tech-related issues. At the core of all the work she does is a commitment to unearthing joy, and does that mostly through community building.

Hello, Bloomers!

My journey started with my curiosity to understand mental health, at a time when I had limited access to information about the topic. I was struggling with depression and anxiety but did not quite have the language for it yet. This led me on a journey to explore and understand “what was possibly wrong with me?!” and as a result got drawn into the world of wellness.

In 2022, my curiosity about wellness was focused on the African continent in general, which led to the birth of Kurapa Moyo, loosely translated to “healing the heart”. As I continued to explore and learn more about the topic, my focus began to increasingly narrow down to a particular group, ‘African women’. This came as a result of exploring different systemic and cultural barriers that affected the quality of their lives.

In 2023, I had the opportunity of holding space for 11 African women, through an intimate co-learning journey, Creative Transcendence: From collective trauma towards collective healing. We were able to use various imagination tools to draw a path to a reality where African women shared more than just trauma, but joy as well. Learn more about the journey here.

Since then, we crafted a Food, Health & Wellness Guide highlighting the nutrient-rich Indigenous African foods vital to our well-being in collaboration with a licensed dietitian as well as conversations, like one with Linda Kaoma, a spiritual poet who believes in the use of words as a conduit to healing.

These experiences have further deepened my conviction that wellness should not only be prioritised but also contextualised to African women’s realities. It is important that they experience fulfilling lives, in THIS lifetime, and not one that is promised beyond this.

Just as everything is a work in progress, so has Kurapa Moyo. After many trials and lessons, we're thrilled to reintroduce ourselves with renewed focus and exciting new offerings. We’re committed to contextualising wellness for African women through thoughtful knowledge-sharing and tailored programs. We’d love for you to join us on this journey.

Spring Strategies gets that, deeply. And we're thrilled to partner with them to amplify a thoughtful, intersectional, and global financial empowerment program for social impact organizations: Financial Innovation and Resilience.
