Starter Story - "sit down, shut your mouth, and listen"

“Sit down. Shut the f*ck up. And listen.”

That’s how I hyped myself as I walked into Bean & Bean (coffee shop in NYC).

I was about to meet a founder 10x more successful than me.

At the time, Starter Story was a few months old, and I was stuck.

A little traction, sure. But I still had no idea what the hell I was doing.

But for some reason, this guy—a founder of a multi-million dollar business—agreed to let me buy him coffee.

I was nervous as hell.

I sat down and immediately did the one thing I promised myself I wouldn’t do—I started blabbering on about my idea.

He cut me off mid-sentence.

“Pat… what you built so far is awesome. I'm a big fan. I think you're going places. I wanna help.”

I was floored. Did. not. expect. that.

I took a breath and asked him a simple question:

“Honestly, I just want to learn about your journey. How did you build this?”

For the next hour, he shared everything: his successes, failures, goals, and tactics.

No fluff, just the real sh*t.

In that hour, I barely talked, I just let him roll. Every time he stopped talking, I just asked another question. And another. And another.

I swear—I learned more in that ONE hour than I had in 100s of hours in front of my computer.

After our meeting, I spent the rest of my day at work thinking about what we talked about.

It clarified... everything.

I knew exactly what I needed to do next.

This was the moment I realized I wasn’t meant to figure everything out alone.
