Product Habits - The new silos

Boy was I right.

Back in January, I called it:

2020 is the year of Collaboration.

The writing was already on the wall, we were all collaborating online more than ever.

Then in March, the pandemic hit and millions of people suddenly found themselves stuck having to work from home.

Overnight, the challenges of collaboration became just about everybody's problem to solve.

In true Product Habits style, Marie and I have been digging in to understand what’s going on.

We’ve been asking people what their #1 challenge is when it comes to collaborating with co-workers.

And now we’ve got the answer.

Even though companies are using more cloud collaboration tools than ever, they are still struggling with communication and alignment.

The problem is getting worse each day. And there’s no end in sight.

We are constantly experiencing miscommunications and alignment issues at work.

Here are a few responses we saw from our collaboration survey:
  • "Communication is the biggest challenge. It is difficult to know what each team and person is prioritizing and how they like to work."
  • "The biggest challenge is ensuring the team is aligned on goals and productivity."
The tools have not saved us. In fact, the tools are causing even more confusion and indecision.
  • "There are multiple tools with overlapping features. It’s hard to decide how much info you put where."
  • "Not knowing what tool is the best for each use case leads to inconsistencies with how they’re being used across the board."
As if that wasn’t enough, the use of so many collaboration apps has now led to a new problem:

"Everyone uses so many different tools. Each team (dev, product, business) is using their own set of tools so it’s hard to communicate between teams."

Apps are the new silos.

Cloud collaboration has created new problems that look like the old ones.

Digital walls that are powered by the apps we use daily.

Companies have spent decades trying to tear down departmental walls. Now our new apps have reinforced those walls.

The new silos.

This is the collaboration problem we’ve been focused on solving at FYI.

Documents were just the start.

We’re creating a single way for people to find, organize and share information at work.

To take down these new walls while preserving the freedom of using whatever apps make sense for each individual and department in a company.

Stay tuned, there’s a lot more coming from us!

Hiten =)

P.S. If your company is drowning in apps and you want help now, reply to this email. I’d love to show you what we’re working on.
